Cerny shares division award, Holloway returns to management – evening news

Radek Cerny has been honoured for leading the Championship in clean sheets in his first season with QPR. Elsewhere Ian Holloway is back in management after being appointed by Blackpool.

Cerny has kept 19 clean sheets in 47 appearances this season since joining from Tottenham on a two year deal last summer. It hasn’t always been plain sailing for the Czech who was barracked by his own fans inside the first 20 minutes of his debut against Barnsley on day one and then made a poor mistake for the third goal at Sheffield United a week later. However apart from a nervy spell around Christmas Cerny has been in supreme form for mist of the season, winning supporters around and points for his team.

Cerny shares the golden glove with Sheff Utd’s Paddy Kenny who matched his achievements. Kenny could yet end up in the Premiership if this Monday’s play off with Burnley goes well, Cerny however is left to enjoy his summer holiday with the rest of the QPR players and he admitted to the club’s official website that he would turn down personal acolades for a swift return to the Premiership.

Cerny said: “I'm really pleased to win this award, but I'd much rather have won a medal for going up. We didn't win enough matches last season and that is something we need to improve next season. However, I really enjoyed my first season with Rangers and I was pleased with my own form.

"Defending is a team responsibility - from one to eleven, every player plays their part. Defensively we are a very strong unit. Each player takes their defensive responsibilities very seriously here and that is the key to keeping things tight at the back. We defend as a team and we attack as a team - so this is very much a team award."

Meanwhile former QPR favourite Ian Holloway will be back at Loftus Road next season, in charge of our Championship rivals Blackpool. Holloway was appointed on a one year contract at Bloomfield Road today following the departure of Tony Parkes earlier this week. Holloway had been out of work for the past year following his messy departure from Plymouth and subsequent relegation disaster at Leicester. Pool Chairman and QPR favourite Karl Oston said: "We are delighted to be able to welcome a manager of Ian's calibre to Bloomfield Road. He is a very professional and thorough person who ticked all the boxes and has an excellent track record. He is hungry to take the club forward."

Back in W12 it seems that Rangers are being priced out of the race to sign Swindon Town striker Simon Cox. The Robins are looking for £1.5m plus but Rangers are drawing the line at a deal worth £1m with clauses. Swindon boss Danny Wilson admits he is resigned to losing his 32 goal hitman: “I'll be disappointed if he does leave, but I'm a realist, I think there's a good chance it will happen.”

The rumour mill has today linked QPR with Bari’s Stefano Guberti however the 24 year old’s agent says he is holding out for a move to Roma. Claudio De Nicola said: “He is a lad at the start of his career, even if he has done very well this season. Last week I spoke to the Roma directors and Guberti could be offered a four-year deal. Within a month I hope to have a deal completed. We turned down an offer from Flavio Briatore's QPR to wait for Roma.”

The London Informer says today that former Burnley boss Steve Cotterill is now the favourite to take over at Loftus Road. Aidy Boothroyd, Colin calderwood and, agh, Jim Magilton are the other three contenders however Cladio Ranieri and Steve Coppell have been ruled out. The article goes on to quote the infamous “QPR source” although as that source seems to believe that Danny Webber plays for Bristol City I’m starting to doubt his credibility. Calderwood has today also been linked with the vacant post at League Two Chesterfield.

Elsewhere in the Championship Sheffield United are fumiing that premiership referee Mike Dean will be in charge of Monday’s play off final. Dean sent off United’s Matt Kilgallon in ridiculous circumstances for a high boot in the Sheffield derby at Hillsborough in October and hasn’t refereed a Blades game since. Blackwell said: “I'm very disappointed with the stupidity and insensitivity of the appointment. I'm not saying Mike Dean is not a good referee but at Hillsborough he had a poor game and my marks reflected that. Who turns up in the final ? A referee we've had a major problem with. I just don't understand the thinking of it."

Finally Vince Purdue, coach of Mill Hill Rangers and the man who brought Tottenham’s John Bostock through his ranks, has tipped QPR youngster Bruno Andre, 15, as the next success story. Vince said: "He's a winger and is really quick but he's very skilful too. I really believe he'll be the next big thing."
