In the second part of today's history lesson we look at a few other games over the years, some with more to play for than others.

1949/50 has been covered a few times in our little look back in times and was a season where three teams, ourselves and both Sheffield clubs all ended up on 52 points, but only one would go up in second place, 10th April was a day when we pushed ourselves into the frame and in doing so cost Sheffield United promotion.

They were the visitors to the Dell on this day exactly 70 years ago, it was described as a tough bruising encounter and it was won in the 82nd minute with a Charlie Wayman goal.

in 67/68 we beat Arsenal 2-0 in front of 23,207 fans, both goals came from Ron Davies in what was described as an uninspiring game that gave us two valuable points, although we were in mid table we needed to ensure that a bad run didn't drag us down.

Arsenal were heading for a League & Cup double when they arrived at the Dell on 10th April 1971, they would eventually pip Leeds to the title by a single point, this game was as difficult a one as they would have in their run in to the end of the season, they would win 2-1 with goals from Radford and McLintock with a Terry Paine goal in between.

But this was the only goal they would concede in their last 9 league matches and goalkeeper Bob Wilson would be the man of the match in this one.

In 1975/76 when Blackpool arrived at the Dell it was a week after we had reached the FA Cup final, this was of course Blackpool's second visit of the season as they had been 4th round opponents back in January when we had beaten them 3-1 with two goals from Mick Channon and Bobby Stokes.

It was a case of deja vu in that we beat them again by the same scoreline, Nick Holmes Mike Channon and a David Peach penalty doing the honours in a convincing win.

The crowd of 21,553 in January was seen as disappointing with Blackpool bringing only about 800 supporters, they brought even less for this league clash, the overall attendance though was almost identical with exactly 205 more watching the League clash.

This too could be seen as disappointing, after all this was now the most exciting time of the club's history .

In 1992/93 we were well clear of relegation by mid march when we went into the top 10, but we would get only 4 points from our last 8 games and end up 18th, the visit of Chelsea on 10th April would provide 3/4 of those points when a Nicky Banger goal just after the break proved to be the only one of the game.

1998/99 was the great escape season, our trip to Aston Villa was a debacle, future Saint Mark Draper opened the scoring in the 12th minute , Claus Lundekvam was sent off just before the break, in what was described a joke decision and then goals from Joachim and Dublin completed a rout, things were desperate.

10 years on and things are just as desperate, this time we head up to the West Midlands again, but to Wolverhampton to play Wanderers on Good Friday.

It's another 3-0 defeat for a Saints side already effectively relegated in that administration has a 10 point deduction ready to be applied if we don't go down of our own free will and accord.

Ironically it is Saints fan Sam Vokes who scores the winning goal for the home side virtually straight from the kick off, Jody Craddock made it two in the 6th minute and by the 19th minute we were 3-0 down, God only knows how there were no further goals in the remaining 70 minutes, perhaps Wolves had 5 sent off. that is the only feasible reason I can come up with
