Leeds are giving Luciano Becchio a trial, while Tomi Ameobi is on his way to Doncaster Rovers.

Former Barcelona striker Luciano Becchio has joined up with Gary McAllister's squad in Ireland. The 24-year-old Argentinian has been training with the club, and Leeds have now received international clearance for him to make his debut against Shelbourne on Wednesday .  Leeds are expected to give him another run out against Barnet on Saturday, and will then decide whether to sign him on a permanent basis.

Becchio started his career with Bocca Juniors before moving to Spain where he played at Barcelona and Mallorca. He spent last season with Spanish second division side Merida, scoring 28 goals in 50 appearances. I don’t know much about the Spanish second division, but if the standard is as good as our League two then his scoring record would be quite impressive. In any case, I’m sure he’d be a better bet than Dean Windass.

Meanwhile, Gary Mc.Allister has decided that Tomi Ameobi is surplus to requirements, and the young striker has gone to Doncaster. Although the player is out of contract, Leeds are still entitled to compensation because of the players age, and the transfer fee will depend on the number of appearances the player makes for the South Yorkshire club.

Ameobi made just one senior start for the Leeds, and that came at Portsmouth in the Carling Cup last season, in a game when we were resting numerous first choice players. He then spent the end of last term on loan with Scunthorpe United.

Gary McAllister told the official site "Opportunities would have been limited for Tomi this season. I am looking to strengthen in terms of strikers and we have some young players coming through in that area as well. We wish Tomi all the best for the future."

It may seem odd that we have offloaded a player to a club in a higher division, but that shows the strength of the squad that Mc.Allister is building at Leeds, which hopefully will be far to good for the clubs we will face in League One this season.
