| James Spencer became Keith Hill's first Summer signing when he put pen to paper on a two year contract on 1st June 2007. Previously, he had spent all his career with his hometown club County. He made his debut for the Edgeley Park side as a sixteen year old, playing against Watford in what was the equivalent of the Championship.
He was very highly rated, and for one so young he has chalked up a large number of appearances for the Hatters. At time of writing, he's just turned 22 yet has made over 100 appearances for County.
During that time, his displays attracted the attention of a number of big clubs such as Liverpool, Sunderland and West Bromwich Albion. It was those sort of performances which saw Spencer pick up the Stockport County Player of the Season award in 2004-5.
However, it would appear his career has lost track a little since then. He lost his position as first choice keeper during the 2006-7 season, with manager Jim Gannon preferring a number of loan keepers ahead of Spencer.
Understandably frustrated at the lack of first team opportunities under Gannon, Spencer requested a move, and after hearing about Dale from fellow County player Adam Le Fondre and Dale keeper Matt Gilks, he had no hesitation making the move to Spotland.
His contract will see Spencer remain at Spotland until the Summer of 2009.
