CCF Rebooted: No.12 - Matty Edwards

Matty Edwards made just a handful of appearances for Dale as a back-up keeper to the likes of Kenny Arthur and Josh Lillis.

Position: Goalkeeper

Arrived from: Leeds United

Played : 2010-2012

Appearances : 8

Goals : 0

Left for: Retired

Although signed in 2009 following his release from Leeds United where he had failed to make a first-team appearance, Edwards had to wait over a year to make his debut for the club as he was mainly utilised as a substitute goalkeeper and often played second fiddle to loan signings including Frank Fielding, Tom Heaton and Owain Fon Williams.

His professional debut came in November of 2010, when he came on for the injured Lillis in a 1-1 home draw with local rivals Oldham Athletic, but that would be his only appearance in the 2010/2011 season.

The following season, Edwards would again have to compete with loan signings Jake Kean and Peter Kurucz as well as the more experienced David Lucas as Dale struggled towards the bottom of the table, but he still managed seven appearances in that campaign, two coming from the bench.

He kept a clean sheet in a 0-0 draw with Yeovil in December and then started four consecutive games towards the end of the campaign when relegation was already all but confirmed, convincing John Coleman to offer him another short-term deal as the club were relegated into League Two.

It was around this time that he was also called up to the Scotland U21 side, making his only appearance as a substitute in a 1-4 defeat to Italy.

Edwards would fail to make another appearance in 2012/2013 and was released by the returning Hill at the end of that campaign, retiring from football due to the wrist injury that had kept him out of contention for the majority of that season.

He went on to found Wirral-based coaching company Shootin Boots and has spent time on the coaching staff within the academy back at his former club Leeds.
