Ben joined the club early in the 2004-5 season on a free transfer from Preston North End, and came to Spotland very much as a prospect, rather than someone who was expected to challenge for a first team place straight away, and became a regular in the reserves for the rest of the season.

His reserve outings had him down as very much a right winger, but he was given a first team chance on the last game of the 2004-5 season, when he appeared on the left wing as a sub against Boston, and he impressed everyone with his trickery which had the Boston defence in all sorts of problems.

After a number of impressive performances in pre-season, he became a regular in the first team squad in the early stages of the 2005-6 season, though he only had a couple of appearances off the bench to show for it. He was laid low by an eye injury for a while which put a halt on his progression for a while, though he came more into the reckoning towards the close of the season.

He was given his first start for the club in April 2006, but he failed to do enough to convince the management that he was worthy of another deal, and he was released in May 2006 with a total of ten appearances for the side most of which were as a left winger.
