Do we really want Davenport?

Former West Ham United player Calum Davenport is now training with Leeds, but many Leeds fans will have concerns about his rather complicated personal life.

The former Spurs and Coventry defender was capped by England at Under-21 level and has more than 150 professional appearances to his name. He cost West Ham £3m in 2007, but left the Hammers in March after his contract was cancelled by mutual consent, following an incident at his mother's home in August 2009.

The 27 year-old suffered serious leg injuries when he was stabbed in the legs, but he was later cleared of trying to attack his pregnant sister during the incident, while a man was jailed for six years for the attack. It’s believed that the man jailed was his sister’s boyfriend and the attack was allegedly followed by some unfavourable comments that Davenport made about his sister’s choice of partner.

Simon Grayson told the official site "He looked fit and strong. We'll see how he goes. There is no timescale. It might be a week or a month. We'll see how he is when he's ready to play. We'll take things from there."

Davenport has obviously got the potential to improve the Leeds defence, and heaven knows we need to strengthen that area of the squad. But will it be worth it if he proves to be a disruptive influence in the dressing room? We’ll have to hope that if we do sign him it will turn out to be worthwhile.
