Saw this earlier today. 49 staff made redundant with immediate effect.

The Evening Chron has been a fixture on news stands for decades and is part of the history and culture of Oldham. The 'Green Final' was their version of the Football Pink, published by the MEN.

Very sad, but others will inevitably follow....

Interesting scenario developing. In 2008 Oldham Evening Chronicle (Hirst Kidd and Rennie Ltd.)) bought 50% of Rochdale Online. The Companies House records show a Mr Philip Hirst as a Director of Rochdale Online.

Surely no one ever buys 50% of a business, 51% or 49% but not 50%, it's a recipe for stalemate.

The paper was a daily paper at one time including saturdays if i remember rightly. Head office at bottom of Union Street. The inevitable result of the 'tinterweb'.

Thanks for the heads up. I gleaned the info from www.pressgazette.co.uk (see below) and misinterpreted the expression 'co-owner' as meaning an equal share. Apologies to Rochdale Online for the misunderstanding.

This is bad news. Local papers publish a lot of dross but at their best they do an important job of holding to account people in power that wouldn't ordinarily get covered by the national papers.
