Not only was he so gifted mentally but he was one of the few people for whom MND (ALS in the US) actually stopped advancing (or at least did so very slowly). It does make one wonder how much strength of mind plays in combatting illness. Another fascinating topic.

He's the bloke who brought science to the masses, and it seems like he was a thoroughly nice guy too.

Condolences to his family.

It is a fascinating topic, but i'm also sure there's no intention by anyone engaging in it that MND which advances at a more likely pace might be due to any lack of strength of mind; it could just be natural variations in the virulence of the disease. Similarly, when people overcome a "battle" with cancer, which doesn't imply that those who succumb haven't "battled" hard enough.

Hawking also had the advantage of being surrounded by very supportive systems, and living in a place where specialists in the field also live. It's also been mooted - i think by himself, although i could be mistaken on this - that his physical disease helped him to concentrate his incredible mental capacity on those subjects which were of interest to him, and which he did more than anyone to raise awareness among the population at large.

RIP

A truly great man. An absolute giant in the science world, and great campaigning man too.

“Remembering Stephen Hawking, a renowned physicist and ambassador of science. His theories unlocked a universe of possibilities that we & the world are exploring. May you keep flying like superman in microgravity, as you said to astronauts on @Space_Station in 2014”

Absolutely not. Illness and disease is not an affliction of weak-mindedness, but I have read and heard so many stories of the opposite where strong minds overcome seemingly insurmountable adversity.

One such - an ex-hero of mine called Lance - overcame testicular cancer that would have killed most. I read his book and his account of it was inspirational. Of course in the light of what has transpired since, some of it may be open to question now (though I doubt it), but even so ........ it's by no means the only such victory over a death sentence.

I am sure you are right about his mental acuity being heightened by his condition too (his daughter as much as said so). Genius, good egg and rock-star status scientist. Amazing man and loved the world over.
