No stadium has proper stewarding. Casual labour with a bib on at minimum wage employed a couple of hours at a time drilled for 5 mins by very slightly better paid 'supervisor' before any and every game. They can hardly be expected to spot and bodily intervene when a coke fueled tit suddenly decides to run on the pitch. This goes for Wembley, Lords etc. etc. Order is fragile and quite right. These things are rare and we don't need too much supervision on the whole.

What do all the police actually do at a game. They tend to stand in groups outside the stands chatting most of the game.

It took them until about half an hour into the game until they removed the white cover at the Pearl Street side so there's no wonder there were hundreds of fans stood at the front, a lot of them didn't have anywhere else to go.

The white tarpaulin was obviously there to stop Oldham fans sitting in the very end seats, the seats where away fans have been pelted previously with objects.

Those stood at the front before the sheet was removed were late arrivals or those who congregate as a group and wont look to sit elsewhere. A lot went down to the last block by the Sandy, some wouldn't go there as they wanted to be close to the TDS.

As elsewhere, the away fans numbered approx. 2800. That stand holds 3500. Even with tarpaulin in place, there were more than enough seats for all away fans.

I've seen it a few times in that stand when big away followings happen and even at Bury away in the tinpot trophy this season. Always the same

2 minutes before kick off, a large group of fans arrive en-mass. Up to that point the rank and file have sat where they want. This group want to all be together, but there are only sporadic seats available. They therefore either hang around at the front complaining that they weren't reserved a block or go and sit in a corner where nobody else sits.

It's not the fault of RAFC that such things happen
It's not the job of stewards to move other people to accommodate such a group together
The stewards end up getting abused because of a situation caused by the group of fans
and then criticised afterwards as on this thread, which is unfair in my opinion.

Do you think large groups of Oldham lads will buy their tickets together? There were a few people asking if it was allocated seating on the Oldham message board and the most common response was "we'll sit where we want" if it was.
