Walking through Rochdale exchange this morning past H Samuel, the shutters were down and a notice saying this store has closed down. There has been a H Samuel in Rochdale for as long as I can remember. Still every thing will be ok once our multi million £ white elephant has been built. Boots and I think River Island will be leaving the exchange, leaving a couple of big empty spaces. |  |

H. Samuel made it known some time ago that they were closing their Rochdale branch on May 11th (along with other branches at different times). Poundworld are closing 350 shops nationally, with 5,500 jobs going. Others will do the same. It's far from a local issue. |  |

Its a local problem is as much as a town with an average wage of just over £18k will always be near the top of any closure list. The building of the new shopping centre will simply move some shops from the Exchange or Wheatsheaf to the new one, the net gain in the variet or quntity will be minimal. |  | | |

You're right about Samuels always being in Rochdale. It used to on Yorkshire Street at the entrance to the old market. |  | | |
