Ray Wilson RIP 17:43 - May 16 with 1392 viewsEllDale

A great defender and a World Cup winner.

As an aside, when he signed for Everton from Huddersfield the deal was shrouded in secrecy and the papers were signed at the newly opened Sir Winston Churchill on Bury Road, now part of the Harvester chain.

I suppose it was halfway between the two places in the days before the motorway.

A truly great player. The best defensive left back I ever saw. Really quick over the ground and lightening in the tackle. When he tackled an opponent they usually stayed quiet for a while. He had some real duels with wingers like the great Garrincha. I think he was voted the best left back in the 1962 World Cup in Chile.

A good bloke with his feet on the ground as well. Born in a mining village in the 1930's and signed by Huddersfield from "mens" football.

Possibly the only footballer who went on to become an undertaker as well!

Did Nobby actually work for the family firm though?
Ray Wilson ran his business.

I don't know to be honest but given how small businesses are run I wouldn't be surprised if he'd been involved.
