3-5-2 has its limits. Japan’s 4-4-2 has,for 62 minutes anyway, caused Belgium massive problems.

A front two which go wide are the Kryptonite to three at the back. You need to ensure one wing-back becomes a full back, ie. Rafferty reverts to being a right back. Before long they’ll drift centrally again when the space isn’t there.

The role of wing back can be the Achilles heel of 3-5-2 also. A wing back has an awful lot of pitch to cover and that makes them easier to get behind.

In Englands case we have walker as part of that back 3 so hea crucial to when moments like that happen. Henderson will have to drop back and create a new 3 when walker or magiure are forced wide

This is the One, I've waited for

Belgium's players don't have the tactical and defensively minded work rate to play that formation against a 4-4-2. If you're playing 3 at the back, the wide men need to protect the outside centre-halves - Hazard and Mertens just don't do this at all. In fact, Belgium's formation was more like a 3-2-4-1, but with the 2 in the middle expected to do all the defensive work and five attackers floating about pretty much wherever they liked. Martinez got lucky in this match, if Japan's wingers and striker were better they'd have put four or five past them. Belgium somehow managed to be overrun both centrally and wide in their own half.

England won't have the same problem as we always have the deep midfielder and our wingers work much harder (not to mention our wing-backs being much quicker). We have more a 3-3-3-1 type thing, with Henderson the middle man out of the second three. Not as creative though.
