Plenty of gaps in the sequential numbering. Is that because a lot players have the same squad number every year?

Yeah. As a club we have been pretty consistent over the years and it’s rare players move numbers - for example Cannon has retained 27 for his whole career when there have been opportunities to move. Now and again we see the odd player move - Delaney from 21 to 5 this year and previously Camps from 28 to 10.

Going back even further we can see it’s certainly a club trait as we’ve had first choice strikers who have never worn traditional numbers for the position, or even any in the 1-11 range. Best example was when we had Platt, Connor, Townson and McEvilly at our disposal wearing 21, 27, 19 and 18 respectively while Michael Oliver wore 9 and Matt Doughty 10.

This board needs more shirt number talk.

If I remember correctly, Neil Redfearn wore 38 in his brief spell with us as that's how old he was.

17 has always been a key number for us, too - Rickie Lambert, Glenn Murray and now Perkins.

Probably not as much of a link but Rory McArdle was number 23 as is Finnerty now.

Last season saw Reece Brown take the number 8 shirt. I thought that odd at the time as one thing he's never been is a midfielder, it's debatable as to whether he's a footballer, but if you class him as one, he's a defender. Defenders shouldn't be wearing 8. If pre-season is anything to go off, MJ will be playing in defence wearing 8.

I'm old fashioned when it comes to squad numbers. I don't get why Henderson is 40, or why Bunney was 39, and it outright annoyed me when the Romanian came in and wanted 98 or whatever number it was. When I was growing up, your 1-11 was this:

1
2, 5, 6, 3
7, 4, 8, 11
9, 10

I do wish this tradition was adhered to more often.

This isn't ice hockey, or American football.

If I hadn't seen such riches, I could live with being poor

Ever since Gary Jones left, that number 8 has been somewhat of a curse. Tutte took it after a half decent season the year before wearing 16 and forever flattered to deceive. When he left to join Bury, Jason Kennedy returned on loan from Bradford as we closed in on promotion and looked a shadow of the player we knew while wearing 8 and ended up on the bench more often than not. Next Matty Lund moved from 12 to 8 and missed the second half of the 14/15 season through injury, returned for one game in April and got sent off. After a decent couple of seasons for Lund, it was Brown who arrived to take 8; that worked out well.

Somewhere our ex-captain is probably laughing maniacally. MJW may need to call in specialist help.

On a loosely related subject, why don't players have their names on their shirts in pre-season? It used to be a case that they'd just use 1-11 in the warm up games, but if all players are using their squad numbers, surely we're doubling Jack's workload unnecessarily by withholding the names. Hull did the same so there must be some reasoning for it, but I don't get it.

Maybe the letter templates haven’t arrived from the league yet?

I also believe Jack is due to be absent shortly. We have a replacement who has come from Oldham.

When I was your age, I used to enjoy the odd game of tennis. Or was it golf?

Didn't Bunney pick 39 because his favorite Man City player when he was a kid wore it? As for Hendo and 40, probably a prediction of the age when he will sign his final 2-year contract extension at Dale.. :)

Joe Bunney was randomly allocated the number 39 and scored on his debut against Plymouth. He kept the number as a result. It was also the age at which a close relative died and is his year of birth in reverse (93)

Unlike some clubs Dale seem to have this policy of players keeping the same for season after season eg Henderson, Cannon.

It must have been hard at times when there were only 11 shirts. Steve Melledew once told me that he hated being told to wear number 10 because Big Reg had stretched it!

I suppose in those days you had stereotypes of players; numbers five and ten would be big, seven and eleven smaller.
