One of my all-time favourites for Dale. Feisty, fun and knew where the goal was.
FRMGH ?!?!?
Receptionist: Christopher Dunphy Ecclesiastical — how may I help you? Caller: Chris Dunphy please Receptionist: Who may I say is calling? Caller: An ex-Dale legend Receptionist: Please hold the line caller — I’ll put you though Receptionist: Chris — it’s an ex-Dale legend on the line Chris: Hello Mr. Michael Simpkins — long-time no hear. Caller: No Chris, you numpty, it’s me Holty Chris: Ah, Grant, sorry, crossed wires. What can I do for you? Caller (now identified as Holty): Well Chris, I’m just ringing to say you need to get rid of Hilly pronto Chris: Why do you say that Grant? Holty: Because he said we could if we wanted to. I can do that. Gizza job. Chris: But Keith is the best manager Dale have ever had. Holty: Is he bollox — he doesn’t know his @rse from his elbow Chris: Well he brought you to the club no less than twice and he was telling me only the other day that Build a Rocket Boys was one of his favourite CDs Holty: OK, busted on both points, but come on, how much longer can we go on playing our best goal-scorer nearer to our own goal than theirs? Chris: OK, I suppose Keith did ask for it. The jobs yours Holty.
My fave is the one he scored against Sheff Utd. It totally p*ssed their supporters off and put the game beyond them. What he showed was how to manage a game; wind the opposition up to distraction and encourage his own players. What a presence on the pitch. I would have kept him for another season. Good luck Holty and welcome back here any time.
The worm of time turns not for the cuckoo of circumstance.

That was one of my favourite individual performances of all time simply because it was an absolute masterpiece in game management when we sorely needed it. The way he just revelled in the United fans’ hatred was brilliant too.

That's a great picture. Cheers me right up!

We had so many centre forwards that we thought were decent centre forwards until Holty came along. We used to make so many excuses for the likes of Paul Connor saying they got no protection off refs or never enough service but then Holty came along and showed us what a great centre forward should be.
There's so many high points you could have with him. The goal at Grimsby where Justin Whittle had him in his pocket for 99% of the game is up there with anything. All he needed was to get the better of him for one moment and that was all it took.
In a world where we're obsessed with trying to turn young footballers into FIFA players, I worry we won't see the likes of Holty again.
