Not sure if my memory is playing tricks, but I seem to recall several years ago when we were fighting relegation, the club brought in Ron Atkinson to advise the manager on what to do. Does anyone else remember that and do you think it is worth hiring an 'advisor' of that calibre until the end of the season to give us a last chance at league 1?

Did he get on with Joe Cooke?
Big Ron was definitely at dale helping out around the time we had Alec Stepney there as commercial manager, I met both him and Dennis law there with my grandad years back. I think Ron was just helping out a bit and nothing was official. But he was certainly their more than once.

I've just looked in to it. Although filmed at Spotland, he was advising Iffy Onoura when Swindon Town were playing us. It was part of a TV documentary.

Big Ron lived on Jowkin Lane at Bamford. Stepney was very briefly commercial manager and I met him several times when he was there in that capacity.
I remember a TV programme with Ron Atkinson advising elsewhere, but I never remember him being here other thn as a manager of a Guest XI for a testimonial match.

Might be an idea to have some knowledge of something before making a random thread about it.
Just saying.

Ron Atkinson volunteered to take training for a few days until a new manager was appointed. Somewhere between Vic Hallom and Eddie Gray at the end of 1986 I would imagine. Atkinson had been sacked by Man U in November and lived on War Office Road at the time. I have no idea if he was taken up on his offer.

That’s pretty much what I remember to a point, I was only about 11 at the time.
Think it was very much informal and pretty sure it was around the time Hornets had a break in and 20k was nicked from a safe.
May be wrong but it’s years back.

Hornets. £20k.
The safe was being moved and sand was falling out all over, I had no idea at that age but apparently stopped the contents catching fire. Even then it was seen as a joke

Hornets. £20k.
In my loft I've got the Financial records from the time of the Hornets sale of the old ground. Bank statements etc. There was well over £1 million pounds in the Hornets bank account at that time. That's when £1 million was a hell of a lot of money in lower level sports teams terms.
