An eccentric and controversial character, but instantly recognisable. RIP.

Channel 4's racing coverage went south very quickly when they got rid of the team that he was part of to pander to the mainstream. No wonder they lost the rights and the ratings were so low.

He was a great character for racing and was missed since then.

Can’t say I ever thought john mc’s contribution to C4 was beneficially to folk who enjoyed their racing. He was an awful bookmaker, a very average journalist ang poor presenter. His desire to be in the punters corner skewed his judgement to often. The likes of Alistair Down were far better for the horse game. TBF he was a good PR man for the greyhound industry.
The top class London restaurants will certainly miss him.

Sorry, but you're talking bollox

McCririck won the British Press Awards Specialist Writer of the Year Award and Campaigning Journalist of the Year, whilst writing for the Sporting Life

The Sporting Life is the sports journalist's bible, and to win those awards from your fellow journalists is just about the highest praise you can receive

May be I did understate his investigative racing journalism but in my opinion he was not in the same league as Richard Evans and Rodney Masters in this that rather niche journalist field. It’s a matter of option but his passion did not always result in the cause he was reporting on being highlighted in the right way. Evans was peerless in this field. The Sporting Life had to many masters to serve to be able to really allow its journalists to go for the jugular. It was the same as the Racing Post with the FOBT debate. The post took the side of the bookmakers big style. Now sure there was a lot at stake in terms of potential reduction of the levy and race sponsorship and shop closures, but the impact on gamblers and the bad publicity should have trumped the other issues. But the post and life before it were conflicted by the income they receive from the bookmakers.
For the record I believe the £2 spin limit was set to low and should have been £10. As it is all that business will now go on line, where the high st bookmakers have more competition.

Apart from the very occasional flutter on a big race, i'm a non-gambler but agree that setting the spin limit at £2 is probably too low. I've no moral objections but clearly there has to be a reasonable limit in place to offset the social misery caused by adults with addictive tendencies

The enjoyment that many thousands of people get from horse racing is either tarnished or spiced (depending on your outlook) by the goings-on behind the scenes that can and always will contribute to the outcome of races. In his younger days, my dad did the occasional spot as a "bookies runner" and i learned a fair bit from him about the aforementioned. For me, McCririck's on-screen presence was almost overwhelmingly positive in bringing some of the mysteries of the bookies to the fore. Of course, some people couldn't abide him and that's fair enough, but shouldn't be allowed to detract from his gift for enhancing the experience of many punters

My family has history as bookies runners. The old timers may remember Hennegan’s bookmakers around Castleton and Rochdale. Before it was legalised 3 of my great uncles, who were related to him used to run bags from their factories in Castleton for him.
I guess you can say racing / gambling is in my blood. Fortunately unlike many I do note have an addictive personality (Dale excluded of course).

My dad's experience was mainly on-course, at Haydock and the old Manchester race track. He was literally a good runner (which helped) but also quick with the maths which was pretty essential back in the day. He did a few jobs with local bookies but gave up after one of them took on a big punt and lost - it would've cleared him out, before the days of established limits - so he just left the premises with the day's takings including my dad's wages and was never seen again

Tommy Hennegan, ( I thought it was Heneghan ) that's a blast from the past. As I recall he was the guy behind the scenes at Castleton Moor. I remember going to the Moor to watch Littleborough when Gary Sobers was pro for the 'borough.

I was a bit late getting to the ground and it was packed. There were cars parked on the approach to the gates and Tommy was sat at a desk collecting the entrance fees. Sobers was already in and as I was walking up to Tommy's desk Sobers hit a tremendous 6 that came out through the gate, ran up the road and then ran back towards where Tommy was sat.

Being half of Tommy's age then I said to Tommy, " I'll throw it back onto the pitch for you Tommy ". He said " No let me do it ".

So he went to throw the ball back but something went wrong with his arm and he managed to bounce the ball off the bonnet of a nearby car that just parking up. The owner got out and gave Tommy both barrels, " What the f--k are you doing you silly old bastard " was the jist of it ! Tommy stammered something out about " Parking being at the owners risk ".

The owner replied - " I don't mind Sobers hitting my car but not bloody pensioners like you hitting my car from 3 yards away ".

Ming I hang my head in shame about the spelling. It was the Byrne brothers who use to run bags for Tommy in the pre legal days.
Lovely reminder of the story of Sobers at the Moor. My cousin John always says it was the best afternoon’s sport he ever attended. But no doubt the constantly open bar helped colour that view.
Tommy is always remembered in fond terms in the family. He did have the money to stump up for a couple of extra rounds mind.
Sadly he made a few decisions which caused the shops to be let go before I was aware of them, and I never actually met him.
Thanks again for the story.

Sobers made about 120 odd that day. He ended up with 9 fielders all on the boundary rope with just the bowler and wicket keeper standing back a bit. He was still making most of the runs in 4s and 6s because he could hardly run at the end. When he was eventually out he had walked down the wicket to a ball, missed it, and just kept walking, allowing the wicket keeper to run forward and stump him. He could have regained his ground easily but he'd had enough.

Everybody I knew liked Tommy, he was one of the characters you don't get these days. He came across as a nice bloke to me.
