Theres 100s, if not thousands of Motown records that are better than that, which doesn't even have that typical "Motown Sound". It could have been issued on virtually any record label. Nothing surprises me any more regarding the media's or Joe Public's musical taste. |  | | |

The sweet sound of Just My Imagination by The Temptations has been my Motown favorite for as long as I can remember and Frank Wilson's Do I Love You (indeed I do) is always worth getting up to dance to plus Stevie Wonders Lately is genuinely one of the saddest songs written far superior than Superstition [Post edited 1 Sep 2019 20:02]

Exactly,I`ve just been getting reconnected (via You Tube) with the great Chuck Jackson,early Motown (Any Day Now,Girls Girls Girls),Eddie Holland (I Like Everything About You),Temptations (Since I Lost My Baby),Spinners (I`ll Always Love You,Truly Yours). Wonderful songs in my opinion,but then again,I`m a Motown dyed in the wool head case.
A few years ago,I think it was Rolling Stone magazine said Bob Dylan`s Like A Rolling Stone was the best song ever,then somebody else said no,it was the Righteous Brothers,You`ve Lost That Lovin` Feelin`. I would even go as far to say that "Superstition" doesn't remotely reflect the authentic Motown sound of the 1960's.

Being pedantic Dave I I don't think Chuck Jackson was a Motown artist, certainly in hey day.
As you say " Any Day Now " is a great record. Written by " Burt Bacharach and Hal David if my memory serves me well. One of my favourites by him is " I Keep Forgetting ".
I've got a copy of Dave Marsh's " The 1000 Greatest Singles Ever Made " and I think " Grapevine " is No 1 in his opinion. [Post edited 2 Sep 2019 8:00]

I can strongly recommend visit to the motown museum in Detroit. Not much else in or around the downtown area other than sporting events but the museum is not to be missed. Based in the original studios in a small house. | | | |

A great record but alas not on Motown either. He did some terrific records with The Impressions but his career was cut short by a tragic accident. The on stage lighting rig fell on him when he was playing a charity gig paralysing him ! He was confined to a wheelchair after that. | | | |

According to the Internet Dave the original " Any Day Now " was a " Wand " label recording in the US and released over here on the " Stateside " label. Of course it was re-released many times subsequently yet strangely was never a hit.

I just wish I attended one of the many concerts Motown performed on their 1965 (I think it was) tour of the UK. Can anybody remember the name of that lovely lady who had a cafe at the top of Hall Street in Whitworth? I used to go in there most mornings when we had jobs up there for Rediffusion and recall she had quite a few Motown records on the jukebox. I`ll Always Love You,Ain`t Too Proud To Beg,How Sweet It Is (to Be Loved By You),Uptight,and Jacky Wilson`s Higher And Higher,my favourite song of all time. Pint pot of tea,couple of slices of toast listening to the Detroit Spinners,then out into the rain and cold on Wallbank estate,amazing memories. | | | |
