I suffered from this a few years ago... it's a strain or inflammation of one of the ligaments on the sole of the foot. Another nickname for it is "first step syndrome" because taking the first step after having been in bed is agony.
It can last anything from a few weeks to several months, but tends to clear up quickly once it decides to go. Hard to treat, but insoles worn inside shoes are said to help, as are ice and anti inflammatory medicines.
