With the club promoting this ‘Kids for a Quid’ initiative which they have in the past also, alongside the recent cheaper season tickets, it got me wondering if in a few years we will see a significant increase in home attendances.
Over the past 10-15 years, well since Steve Parkin, the football on show has been significantly better than when I started watching, when Eddie Grey was manager, I forget the year. I’d hazard a guess that home attendances have increased since the late 80’s and it’d be interesting to see if there was a kind of line chart available that’s shows home attendances from the 80’s or before to the present day to view the trend, it might even give us an idea of what we could expect in another 10 or so years.
I’ve just done a google and come across this post from the official site stating that last years average attendance is the highest since the early 70’s, possibly due to the large away followings, but no mention of home attendances. https://www.rochdaleafc.co.uk/news/2019/may/attendancefigures_2018-19/

It really is up and down. I’m quite surprised at how low the home support was 97/98 98/99. I expected a steady increase from the earliest stat, but it’s not that at all. It has increased since those earliest stats, but most likely due to the crap football being played back then when it was so low. Cheap tickets and success appears to be the only way forward, we’ll certainly historically, maybe these kids for a Quid incentive will bare fruit in a few years. | |

For what its worth,I'm taking my 5 year old girl tomorrow for her first ever game, she's only recently took much interest so I'll see if we can make it past half time at least!
I'm not sure there is an easy answer,but to steadily increase crowds offering kids free/cheap tickets surely can't do any harm in the long term.
I'd personally much rather see a good few hundred free kids sat on seats enjoying themselves, than a load of pigeon shit splattered all over the empty seats. |  | | |

any chance of theaverage attendance during the first promotion season. We will never again see gates in excess of 11000 plus v Doncaster and 13000 plus v Halifax. I was at both games stood on the same elevated spot and my observation was that the attendance was greater by a margin v Doncaster than the attendance v Halifax. I guess there is no way of knowing but the home support may have been similar but the travelling support would have been telling. Both games were played on a Saturday and you could argue the Halifax game was more important not only was it a local derby it was played at the back end of the season with promotion at stake for both teams also the return game v Halifax att 17000 plus was incredible albeit in a larger stadium that did not look as packed. I would be interested if anybody else at both home games and the halifax away game care to comment? | |

You hit the nail on the head there. The Pearl Street family section is nearly always two thirds empty and god knows what it would be if we didn't do the kids initiative. As we move towards the business end of the season there is some logic in doing a family ticket for a stupid price of say £10. Two adults and up to 3 kids and get them into a habit. Run it for 5 or 6 games in a row.
As I look around where I sit compared to 10 years ago, half the fans that have gone missing have died or are now too infirm to attend. We need to work hard on attracting fans just to stand still really. It would be interesting to see what the average age and median ages is for the season ticket holders (they capture the data don't they) and compare it to other clubs. I suspect we attract a much older gate than many clubs and they will die away......look at what has happened to hornets where I suspect that half of their fan base will pass away in the next decade.  | | | |

Over time we should see some floating ,less passionate, ex-bury supporters come our way even if it is 150 regulars. It is a constant effort to market the club even to stand still in terms of crowd numbers.
But a sea change in numbers would only come if we got to the Championship. For that to happen all the stars would need to align perfectly. A big part of that equation would be the spirit in the camp. It was good to read the Steve Parkin interviews recently when it was revealed that an excellent team spirit was a vital part of his success. I believe BBM fosters a good team spirit but it is my feeling that he needs to go the extra mile, then go another extra mile. I am not seeing a constant EXTRA desire on match day, although we are playing well recently.Team spirit filters onto the "terraces". Picking up the vibes from our fans' singing I don't feel that extra passion. For example, we used to sing a chant before kick-off, to each individual player. That's gone. I am sure BBM has the capability to get more of that team spirit going thus turning it into more points on the board...and more home fans. [Post edited 25 Jan 2020 10:21]

Remember the individual pre match chants well, not sure it was every player but certainly under Sutton reidy, Jonny Bowden, flounders, Whitehall, Lancaster etc all had chants pre match and always responded to it well and it must fire them up!
Personal favourite as the players were warming up in training was a shout to Dave Lancaster from the sandy to “Tell that Williams to Feck Off” he surly showed his number 9 shirt after some fumbling and it resulted in the lanky chant, to which he gave a clenched come on fist.

Interestingly (if you like that sort of thing), but yesterday was only the second time we've had a crowd over 3,000 v Gillingham in the last 15 home meetings with them, excluding the play-offs!
The only other time was on the final day of the 2008/09 season.
Unusually, the crowd, was larger than the historical average v Gillingham at Spotland. | |
