NFR: History of the Spotland area 10:52 - May 30 with 8852 viewsSheffdale

One of my projects at the moment is trying to add context to my family history. I was brought up in the Spotland area and both grandparents were local. My ggf (William Robert Ashworth) was in the early 20th century the owner of Foot Mill, described as a mill beside the first bend of the river north of Spotland Bridge. I can see it on an 1850 map. As it's going to be some while before I am over that way I wonder if anyone walks around there? I suspect it's part of the Healey Dell Nature Reserve. If you do could you look around for any evidence of the mill being there and let me know. I expect many of us have ancestors in the Spotland area so who knows this could be a close season thread! My other ggf (James Goodwin) was a gardener for George Kemp, who became the first Lord Rochdale, so I have been in touch with the current Lord Rochdale and we are now on first name terms don't you know!

It could be that great-grandfather Ashworth's mill was part of the short-lived post-WW1 boom in the cotton trade and was then caught in the 1920s slump.

The Manchester Guardian (8 March 1924, p.4) carries an advert: 'For sale by private treaty, freehold shed and three-storey mill, a portion built 1920 ... [details of machinery and other items for sale]. Also freehold farm, about 5 acres, and six cottages, situate at Spod Road, Spotland, Rochdale.

But on 3 May 1924, p. 20, the MG's classified ads included: "Re W. R. Ashworth (in voluntary liquidation), Foot Mill, Spotland, Rochdale. For sale in one lot [description of items for sale] ... by auction on Tuesday May 13, 1924 at the Thatched House Hotel, Newmarket Place, Manchester."

However, the following month's MG (25 April 1925, p.4) advertised "Freehold shed and three-storey mill (portion built 1920) known as Foot Mill, Spotland ... offers are invited for sale by private treaty: a reasonable price will be accepted to close receivership".

Possibly the "Rochdale Observer" carried more details, but searching through it would be a needle-in-haystack situation. The MG is online via Manchester city library, though can be a bit of a trial to use.

Very interesting. I will send you a PM so that I can get a bit of info on your sources.

Yes that is interesting. If you look on the 1908 map diagonally on the other side of the little bridge over the Spodden there is a little row of six cottages named as " Foot Cottages " on the map. Possibly they could have belonged to the mill and may have been built to house essential workers.
As far as I could see they are allotments now and I couldn't see any signs of the old cottages when I was down there yesterday.

I sent another PM seeking clarification about what "next" Thursday means - some people mean it as "this coming Thursday" (i.e. this week) and some people mean "next" as a week on Thursday!!

So, that's Thursday 4th, or Thursday 11th, either is fine at 2pm

AP: Breaking news - 2 Rochdale men detained in well-known local "dogging" area.

During an undercover operation in the Spotland Bridge area, GM police have detained 2 local men in separate incidents.

The first man, described as having a long drooping moustache and a bald pate was apprehended wearing an outlandish suit, and was heard to be rambling about it “being around here somewhere” whilst rustling in the undergrowth and repeatedly uttering the name Dale Arden. The apprehending officer believed the second reference to be in relation to the RAFC scarf around his neck but this link remains unconfirmed at present. When questioned, the man gave his name as Ming the Merciless of no fixed abode, since the planet Mongo could not be found on any current police database. Questioning of the male is on-going.

The second large-eyed man with spindly fingers was found observing a discontinued works for a prolonged period of time in a suspicious manner, interfering with a chain-link steel fence and taking unauthorised photographs of the premises, despite security warnings that this could be a patrolled area, probably. When questioned further, the male gave his name as The Alien — or something sounding quite like that, and said I come from a galaxy far, far away. No chocolate could be found on his person. It is understood that at this stage, the images on the suspect’s phone are currently being forensically examined in a specialist facility in Sheffield and no further comment will be made until the findings of this examination become available.

It is understood from digital communications, that the two men know of each other and further links are also being investigated.

If any member of the public has information relating to these incidents, please, keep them to yourselves until any semblance of lockdown is over. The police are very busy in a Dominic Cummings surveillance operation.

Can anyone come along?

When I was your age, I used to enjoy the odd game of tennis. Or was it golf?

Are you familiar with the entrance to the TBA site, off Rooley Moor Road?

We'll need to limit this expedition to 6!

It's ok by me, as D Alien says we'll have to observe social distancing. I think we should keep politics off the agenda though. I'll be parking the Rolls-Royce up by " The Royds ". Meet up at the old TBA works lodge just down the steps from " The Royds ". 2.00 pm Thursday. I'll be passing the hat around at the end of the guided tour, anybody gets asbestosis , don't blame me.

"Heap" or Samuel Heaps Ltd was a dyeworks situated at the bottom end of Rooley Moor Road where it joins Ings Lane. It was a part of Courtaulds and was certainly still operating in the early 1970s. It was located in a three storey building which around 2000 was being used as a fitness/health club.
