Premiership pay per view. 09:56 - Oct 20 with 853 viewsBigKindo

The following report has appeared in The Times today. Well played to the Toon Army. At last a, somewhat partial, boycott. I have a friend who has two season tickets at the Toon. These he purchases as a three year ticket and pays by direct debit each month. This season they are taking still the monthly debits and now fans are being asked to subscribe to pay per view. They are also publishing match programmes for each home match.

" Newcastle United fans divert £20k to needy with pay-per-view protest

Newcastle lost 4-1 to United in Saturday’s pay-per-view match

Newcastle United fans have raised more than £20,000 for a food bank in the west end of the city after boycotting the club’s match on pay-per-view television on Saturday evening.

Significant numbers chose to make payments of £14.95 to the nufcfoodbank rather than watch their side’s 4-1 defeat by Manchester United after Sky, BT and Amazon Prime controversially introduced an additional charge for some matches.

The move has had a domino effect through the Premier League with fans of Leeds United, Manchester City and Burnley matching the protest payment to food banks in their own cities.

Yesterday the nufc food bank thanked those who had made donations, tweeting: “We’ve reached £20,000! Thanks 100 everyone who has donated to this fantastic cause to help feed local people across Newcastle via the @WEFoodbank. Best Fans In The World!”

Bill Corcoran, who helped set up the food bank, added: “To put that into context the biggest total we’ve ever collected was also against Manchester United. On that occasion we raised £5,800. We’ve trebled it and the money is still coming in.”

Sky and BT have both refused to release their viewing figures from the first weekend of additional fees. Sky said that the figures were “commercially sensitive” as a supporter backlash grew.

The Leeds supporters’ trust said that 100 fans had donated the £14.95 fee in the 24 hours since it also announced it intended to send the money to the city’s food bank.

Burnley FC in the Community, which runs the Community Kitchen food bank in Charter Walk, reported that it had received a deluge of donations since the weekend. The clubs game against West Bromwich Albion yesterday was their first to face the additional charge.

Premier League clubs have yet to reach a decision on how to split any revenue generated from the pay-per-view games. Richard Masters, the Premier League’s chief executive, said: “We’re not the price-setters, but obviously we were fully aware of the prices when we committed ourselves to this service. We think £14.95 is a defensible price point as we’re confident in the product.”

Marc Allera, the chief executive of BT’s consumer division, has said that BT was “pretty much just covering our costs to put these games on” and that the idea was “to get some money moving into the clubs and the leagues that are struggling”.

The Football Supporters’ Association has urged the Premier League and broadcasters to reconsider the pricing structure."

The food bank in Newcastle is the largest in the UK and the Toon Army donate around £5k every game in cash collections. It is a great partnership . Without games they thought about how to raise the cash and the PTV issue was a good opportunity. The football club also donated 1000 pies for the cancelled last game in March and the recipients were extremely grateful. The players also visit the foodbank from time to time to show their support. This is what a community is about

Didn't Dale have a scheme where unsold food was donated to worthy causes after the games?
