Sadly very unlikely now. The NRL has never really cared about the international game, though there are plenty of Australians who are internationalists.
The Australians won’t admit it but the reason they’re not coming over is because their vaccination rollout programme has been completely half-arsed until recently. They were able to open up internally and have full capacity crowds but then COVID returned and NRL games are back behind closed doors and many parts of the country are back in a strict lockdown.
There are a fair few in the UK, like John Kear (Bradford Bulls and Wales coach) who say we should host it regardless but I just can’t see it happening. The best alternative would be to host a Rugby League version of the Six Nations this winter. |  |

The RFL cannot get a round of games completed...there are multiple games off this weekend again because of covid and %s being used to determine league positions. How can they contemplate holding a world cup then? Are they going to award that on % too?

The bubble (and associated rules) for a World Cup would be completely different from those for a regular season, as stated by the RFL.

How do you know how many players from NZ and Australia want to "come over" for it? All players are currently in their own "club bubbles",the NZ Warriors with their families, but the rest, apart from the three Queensland teams, are not. The game is now only being played in Queensland and only because the CEO, Peter V`Landys, is proactive and not reactive. By the end of the season the players and their staff will be heartily sick of being separated from their loved ones and travelling the 24 hour journey to Borisland in cold October will be the last place they`d want to go, plus they`ll have to quarantine for two weeks at their own expense on return. And in anyway, the UK will be a basket case of covid by then, nobody in their right mind would want to go there. | | | |

Australia have had 4 COVID deaths in 2021 to date, New Zealand 1 death. UK had 73 deaths yesterday alone. Add to that just under 50,000 new cases a day in UK. These figures are despite UK having one of the most successful vaccination programmes. | | | |

Yes Olympic team have had several withdrawls from members who either contracted covid or dont want to take the risk.
As for union...lets see what happens before holding them up as a gold(and green) standard. Wimbledon was before freedom day.... and that is an individual event....not a national team selected by a national body. | | | |

All true, though it's more the point that the Australian government has been happy for said athletes/teams to travel. I'm more amazed that the NZ are sending their men's cricket squad on a tour of Bangladesh but then again, Bangladesh (without me checking) probably have better figures than the UK at present! Agreed, the actions of the Australian government are indefensible regarding the exemptions to what it calls a hard border closure.
There seems to be a weird distribution of responsibilities with the national goverment controlling who can enter the country and who can leave but the state governments are left to deal with the consequences. | | | |
