| Refwatch - Halifax Town v Rochdale on 01:36 - Feb 25 by wozzrafc | At 2-0 tonight yes they should have seen the game out, like the 25 others that have done this season. They haven't.Now its all talk of bottling it, throwing it away and not being good enough. We have played 11 games in 5 1/2 weeks with 6 of those being againt top eight clubs. We have took 27 points from 33 possible, on no planet is that bottling it. And thats is a gruelling schedule so i think tireness is far from a lame excuse it wasn’t more points gained. Every single person would have taken that after the Hartlepool game. Unfortunately York have took 25 from 9 games. You have to give them respect. Yes criticism is acceptable but put it into perspective please. [Post edited 25 Feb 1:37]

Yes York at 85% of their best will roll all the teams in this division over such is their firepower. If Dale had come back from 2 goals down last night the result would have been looked at in a completely different light. As it is both York and Dale have their destiny in their hands..who will be the first to capitulate?
| Refwatch - Halifax Town v Rochdale on 08:22 - Feb 25 with 1872 views | EllDale | York take all, or most of their chances from the looks of it. Fine margins: not for the first time this season my thought at the break was, “we could have been two or three up at halftime”. If Gordon’s header had gone in, if Mani D or Moss had got on the end of Rodney’s centre etc. Fact is we played lovely football for 30 minutes and then allowed Halifax back into the game by giving them the chance to get in plenty of crosses and by allowing their midfield pairing the freedom of the pitch whilst Gilmour and East retreated to the edge of our box. But there’s still a game in hand…… Can Jim lift them again though? Perhaps this run of fixtures has sapped the energy levels too much? | | | |

And absolute worse case we get a chance to hopefully win 2 games one at home and one at Wembley for promotion. Terrific season - still plenty more joyful moments to come. In Dales AND York City’s hands…. A strange quirk. Hopefully fire our way back to the top by next Wednesday morning.

| Refwatch - Halifax Town v Rochdale on 05:53 - Feb 25 by D_Alien | We did look, and play tired, last night After a decent start and Rodney's well-taken goal the loss of Tobi (probably not quite ready to return) hindered our momentum and the second half was a very tough watch. Ironically, grabbing our second against the run of play probably gave the lads a false sense of security and we immediately capitulated. I've read all the comments and rationally, we're still in wonderland but football is a game of emotions and there's no doubt our tactical withdrawal felt very much like the gsmes against Spennymoor and Southend Fortunately, we've got every chance to change that around. We've reacted very well to setbacks this season, so our next performance will tell us whether that can be sustained or whether our challenge for the title is likely to peter out I still don't fancy our chances in the playoffs [Post edited 25 Feb 5:54]

| Refwatch - Halifax Town v Rochdale on 09:35 - Feb 25 with 1656 views | davidab2202 | Disappointing as last night's result, we are still on form I think that we are 4th best on last 6 results. Down side York are top and Aldershot and Burton who are on our Horizon very soon are the other teams above us. Still a long way to go and whilst currently fear that we heading for 2nd place at the end of the season, nothing can take away that we have had a great season come what may. | | | |
| Refwatch - Halifax Town v Rochdale on 10:06 - Feb 25 with 1549 views | Bainesy15 | The comments on Jim are fully mental. His subs surprised me yesterday but more for how early they were: Mani had no change from their CBs or service from our players first half, Hendo immediately made more of a difference with his movement. Halifax came out firing after HT and it was their tactical tweak that made the difference. Jim adapted, but it seemed more to be based on being solid and pinching something which initially had worked. Had the subs come later, maybe he could have made something after the 2nd to shore it up, but likewise we might not have been 2-0 up. We had more than enough chances to put the game to bed and didn't (again): it should have been 3 at HT, with Dev's goal, Gordon's free header from a corner and Moss (I think) somehow missing the ball at the far post from Dev's cross with an open goal, then Hendo should have got another with the 1-on-1. Thought Hosannah was poor and it was his man free at the back post who ghosted in. | | | |
| Refwatch - Halifax Town v Rochdale on 10:25 - Feb 25 with 1483 views | Trev | Mad that we've not lost for 11 games and it feels like we're massively out of form. I fear York are just too good but, right now, it's still in our control. Things can change very quickly such is the nature of the title race. How many of us would take a straight shoot out on the last day if offered right now? | | | |
| Refwatch - Halifax Town v Rochdale on 10:28 - Feb 25 with 1470 views | samueloneils | I think the elite posters are being hard on the doubters. We are naturally excited by the progress this season and desperate for success. We have never seen Rochdale win anything in decades. When you need to go gung ho to beat a terrific team who threw it all away last year, it seems strange to take your two best strikers off when only 1-0 up and loads of time left. You have to consider the impact this has on the opposition. "Wow-they`ve given up attacking- we can go full tilt at them now" And they did, and took over the midfield. Jim blamed tiredness for the collapse. But surely that is why he rotates with his many midfield options. These are the things that create doubt. | | | | Login to get fewer ads
| Refwatch - Halifax Town v Rochdale on 10:50 - Feb 25 with 1384 views | Nerazzurri | Was very surprised by the subs of Mani D & Rodney but Mani D was doing nothing & Hendo actually managed to win the ball a few times. We were being torn apart down the right & the subs combined with Moss changing sides gave us back some stability. McBride frustrates me in terms of his finishing but I thought those subs gave us a different attacking dimension. I think we’ve become a little bit one dimensional in terms of our attacking play, everything goes through Gordon & TAR. We’re missing Beckwith in an attacking sense & also Allarakhia on the left, I think that’s our most exciting line up. Perry is a fine defender but hasn’t quite got Beckwiths passing range or attacking runs. If I had to be super critical, in moments when we are trying to soak up opposition possession & trying to get up the pitch Whatmuffs long kicking is not great & he rarely finds Mani D, his kicks often go straight through to a keeper or to a centre back nowhere near any of our players. We’re still on for a record breaking season & finishing second on quite possibly around 103-5 points should not be understated if it does go that way. Looks like York could well break all records, unfortunate for us we have come up against this but fair play to them. We will get promoted, if we stay calm & continue to build what we are doing. Whether it’s this year, or next, we have the ownership group, a good management team, a great squad to build on, we will get there. | |

Bingo. well said. Sometimes I feel like I'm reluctant to offer any (hopefully constructive) critique of the team in case the board "heavyweights" jump all over it. It is a match thread primarily about last nights game. My comments are in the main about same, although sometimes you have to look back at similar instances to bring a little context. It really shouldn't turn into a willy-waving contest as to who was at a game decades ago . For anoraks; I was at the Lincoln game; 2-2 at home, and we were 2-0 up just as the 4th official put the board up to signal additional time. we drew 2-2 and it knocked a lot of the momentum out of the team for a few weeks. Didn't Hamilton get replaced by Hollins soon after? I was also at the Colchester FA Cup 4th round game in about 1971? where we were 3-1 up with less than 10 minutes to play...ended up 3-3 and we lost the replay 5-0 !! Biggest crowd I can recall at Spotland, as one or two turnstiles broke allowing a couple of thousand more than the 13000 odd recorded. I was also at a home game against Port Vale where we were 3-0 up with about 12 minutes to play and we drew 3-3 and they hit the bar just before the final whistle. Another minute and we would have lost I'm certain. That's my junk well and truly waved We are all hurting after last night, but we have to regroup and go again at the weekend in what will be a very difficult . Oh.. finally, Well done to Halifax. I thought they were very good in the second half especially. Think only Lama has praised them before.
| Refwatch - Halifax Town v Rochdale on 11:17 - Feb 25 with 1300 views | 49thseason | All the pressure is now on York City to complete the job, it will be interesting to see how well they cope. Its difficult not to conclude that the pressure of so many recent games and perhaps an over-protective instinct in our manager collided at Halifax last night. Most sporting outcomes are decided inside the player's heads, the ability to control emotions and retain focus , the ability to channel frustration and disappointment into meaningful actions. As a club and as individuals, we are in uncharted territory, we don't have experience of winning titles and cups to fall back on , expectations are high, but doubts abound too. The collapse at the the end of last season plays in our consiousness... Now is the time to set new targets, we have a 13 game season to play, we need 39 points. What has been, has gone. It was just preparation. We now have just 1200 minutes to play, 1200 " moments" of brilliance, and they will be gone in a flash but they will decide if these players will be engraved in our memories forever. Two years into the Ogden regime with another year of the initial plan to go and a mantra of " continuous improvement" echoing around the ground, we are no longer in the end game, we are poised for a major leap forwards... crowds are improving, the club is emerging from decades of neglect, the team may be running on fumes right now but its time to throw everything at the wall and see where it takes us... its all we can do... Play up! Play up! And play the game! There's a breathless hush in the close to-night Ten to make and the match to win A bumping pitch and a blinding light, An hour to play, and the last man in. And it's not for the sake of a ribboned coat. Or the selfish hope of a season's fame, But his captain's hand on his shoulder smote "Play up! Play up! And play the game!" The sand of the desert is sodden red- Red with the wreck of the square that broke The gatling's jammed and the colonel dead, And the regiment blind with dust and smoke. The river of death has brimmed its banks, And England's far and Honor a name, But the voice of a schoolboy rallies the ranks- "Play up! Play up! And play the game!" This is the word that year by year, While in her place the school is set, Every one of her sons must hear, And none that hears it dare forget. This they all with joyful mind And bear through life like a torch in flame, falling fling to the host behind- "Play up! Play up! And play the game!" [Post edited 26 Feb 15:01]

Agree with all of this. The subs were baffling. At times, Mani D can look anonymous if he doesn’t score but like all good strikers, he only needs one chance and he should be kept on as long as possible on that basis alone (and certainly not brought off when there’s plenty of the game left with only a 1 goal cushion). First half I thought we did well and used TAR’s width perfectly against their suspect left back. However in the second half, it felt like watching the team we had last season. We were slow, trepidatious and looked a little nervous in all honesty. Despite this, when you’re 2-0 up with less than 10 to go, there’s no excuse for not seeing the game out and the players have to take the blame there. I’ve not been on here in a good while as I haven’t been able to log in so apologies if this has already been discussed. But what the hell has happened to Allarhakia? Much of our success this season has been built on attacking play from the wing backs and he (alongside TAR) was integral to this. I think Dan Moss is an excellent player and defender but he doesn’t have the same impetus going forward and I think we are in danger of becoming too predictable in only utilising the right flank. He wasn’t even in the squad last night. Has something gone on behind the scenes? Or has he been touted for a move and we are keeping him injury free? Have I missed something here?

Concentration is the first casualty of fatigue and ultimately that is what cost us last night. Looked to me like Halifax out rochdaled Rochdale. This game is harder when you’re not in possession. Last night they had the majority of it, and that is very unusual this season. Good effort lads, regroup and show that we haven’t got this far without the resilience and self belief that will sustain our promotion push this season.

It was a poem from Henry Newboldt written in the late 19th century glorifying the English public school attitude to sport. As far as I know it was never set to music.

That’s a good point about the possession. We didn’t retain it well enough. What was needed at 1-0 was a spell of us keeping the ball at the back.
