Managed the team through one of the most difficult seasons we’ve ever had off the pitch.

Built squads and staff containing good players and good people.

Stuck to his structure, processes and beliefs that all his teams had bought into, even after disappointing individual results. All whilst still finding different ways to win.

Oversaw the best season in the club’s history in terms of wins, points and, ultimately, achievement.

Genius? Nah. Best manager ever? It’s now between him and Hill. With the latter only possibly winning the argument on longevity.

Jim took it really personally when people suggested he couldn't turn up for big games - by building a team that exclusively deals in scoring last minute winners/equalisers

I could hardly disagree with you more on that last point.

Jim has done fantastic at this level but I saw yesterday as completing his apprenticeship. When he's achieved three successve Top 10 finishes in League One then you can start comparing him to Hill. Until he's given us a stable season in League Two he's behind Halom, Dolan, Sutton and (through gritted teeth) Parkin in the rankings.

Hill of course has more than a finger in yesterday's triumph. Who brought McNulty and Henderson, Done and Taylor to the club ?

He has steared the ship from the rocks and to the promised land of League Two. Whilst not a genius his vision and leadership has galvinised the squad and the fanbase. He has learnt lessons from last season and is developing all the time. What should not be underrated is his recruitment. Many were questioning starting the season with a 17 year old as our keeper. He has also developed Gordon, East, Gilmour and Beckwith into key players. Yes, there have been a few Gomes-Mancini's along the way, but they are low cost gambles. His substitutions have also become more impactful.

The key will be to keep progressing. Can we develop a bit more tactical flexibility when we are not favourites in most of the games we play?

Everyone sees things differently of course, but to place him behind Halom who didn’t even keep us up - Gray did, and three managers who had top half finishes without even making the playoffs is a unique viewpoint.

Suppose it’s all about what we each see as success. For me, this has been our best ever season statistically and for the amount of moments that have meant something. And for the sheer consistency in both aspects. It’s almost impossible to write what we’ve been through.

I’ll never understand the argument around the level either. Because there were far worse sides in those we faced in the 80s in Division 4 than this season as well.

But, respect the agree to disagree aspect of this though. Can guarantee we won’t ever see anything like this season again in our lifetimes though. And that would have been the case before yesterday too.

Bizarre comment about Parkin, who helped to turn the club in the right direction after three seasons of Barrow.

Maestro? No. Elite? No. Heavyweight poster? No. Able to be rational and not over-react to individual results? Yes.

Not really - i hated his tactics and keeping Tony Ford in the side for so long. But I do acknowledge his relative success.

His tactics were excellent for the squad he had! In fact very similar to those employed by Dolan - keeping it solid across the pitch.

Who kept Chris Lee in the team for too long. At least Ford was a good footballer.

Unfair to judge Halom on his final season. He was totally shafted by Tommy Cannon who forced him to completely dismantle the squad.
From a statistical point of view of course this is our best ever season. And I'm happy for anyone who's really enjoyed our victories over the past three seasons. I haven't because i've always viwed being in the National League as a humiliating nightmare.Iguess it's a glass half full/empty thing.

I’ve enjoyed the National League experience. Believe that having some humility has also helped us, because we’ve seen how the fans of other clubs at this level have been viewed for thinking they’re better than non league. It’s also been the most competitive promotion we’ve ever achieved, mainly because of the 2 up situation and the amount of similarly competitive clubs in the top 7.

Halom was fine, it’s that he just did alright with a team full of decent pros. Not judging him on his final season at all, more recognising it was Gray who kept us in the league after Cannon had caused all those issues. Fans had turned on Halom and he had to go.

I take nothing away from Gray at all. Keeping us up with that squad eclipsed anything else he acheved in the game.

Its always a grey area in comparing eras.

Right now Jimmy McNulty is attracting attention from elsewhere because he is clearly an excellent coach.

He has been given the tools needed to do the job within responsible reason, and he has delivered.

Remember, he was cruelly denied a first ever champions trophy for this club, and has now won at Wembley that elusive first ever trophy for us.

What he has brought here is instilling camaraderie and squad building, evidenced by that never say die attitude the football world has picked up on. He has delivered that self belief to players and embraced the fan base probably like no other manager. Just look at how those players ran to the fans yesterday ( excepting the magnificent Casey Pettit who shook BW players hands before celebrating.)

He has improved on each season and I look forward to supporting him delivering further improvement next season.

Thanks, Jimmy. Enjoy your break.

Perhaps because I live in Bolton where many seem mono-focussed on the Whites and genuinely haven't noticed our absence from the EFL. I've lost count of the number of times the innocent follow-up question has been "What League are they in ?". On reflection, it was a bit hyperbolic but more out of fear than arrogance. When Altrincham were chanting "You're going to be here for years" at us I did think they were right.

I look at 2 aspects

1. Tactics, substitutions selections etc
2. Player motivation, getting the players to run through a brick wall for you and the club etc

I will give him a 10 out of 10 for the latter but the jury is still out for me on point 1. League 2 has significantly more depth in terms of quality of teams and nest year will show how much he has learned. Can he do it at a level we have been at for most of the last 100+ years? He will have quite a few new players to integrate as well, so let's see. Certainly nowhere near Keith Hill in terms of what he has done, and at the end of the day we won a runners up trophy

You can't compare McNulty and Hill when it comes to levels of achievement. At the moment there is no comparison. Two promotions in the EFL and a Play off defeat. Going toe to toe constantly with much bigger clubs in EFL1 and regularly beating them. No fear football the likes of which we have never seen and finally, generating the club millions of pounds in player sales and giving us the ability to purchase our own stadium. Comparisons aren't required.
McNulty will go down as a brilliant manager for the club though and with all the records stated there will always be the caviat that they happened whilst we were operating outside the EFL, competing against some clubs who weren't full time professional...those are also facts which need factoring in for future perspective. None of that is Jims fault though, he managed us through that first season under circumstances no other Dale manager has been faced with. There's a argument that his achievement in that first year is comparable to this promotion season. Another major thing that needs factoring in is the problems he and the players have had to contend with regarding the pitch and the relaying of it. The home game at Accrington, the fixture pile up, the physical and mental effect of playing catch up. I don't think there's any doubt we would have won the league at a canter had those issues with the pitch not happened. We could have even won it with a record points total i think. McNulty has been amazing and he DID get us over the line, his achievements over the last few years puts him second to Hill in my mind and that's not to be sniffed at. His style of football wins a lot of football matches at this level but it's something i've always struggled with, nothing i can do about that. I love the fact we win a lot though. The last gasp equaliser at Wembley, the swing of momentum and then the way we aporoached extra time. It left me baffled to be honest. Then when our backs are against the wall, we rip up the script, go more direct and invariably look more dangerous and score goals. It's a funny old game.
