With so many being released it is a clear sign that Jim and the board are looking to take the next step. It will be interesting what role Henderson has been offer and whether Edwards' has been offered a deal so that if he does move to Stockport (or elsewhere) we will get some compensation. Jim. Clearly understands the the step up to league 2 and the quality we will need to compete. We can’t carry anyone who cannot deliver consistently and be available most weeks. Thanks to all the guys moving on your efforts will always be very much appreciated in this past season

Even those with limited minutes on the pitch all seemed really decent lads. That looks to give plenty of room now for a NEW LOOK EFL squad and looking forward with interest to the "Incoming" alerts.
| Dale Retained List on 17:28 - May 18 with 9089 views | 442Dale | Not a total surprise and an indication McNulty’s long planned for bringing in other players. Edit: and top quality ones as well; with the budget freed up we can look at Hayes/Nolan/Roberts types. The main one I’d have offered a deal to would have been Pritchard for his quality alone. His injury record isn’t great so it makes it understandable but Smith’s been out for a lot of games too. [Post edited 18 May 18:27]

| Dale Retained List on 17:32 - May 18 with 9080 views | jonahwhereru | Bit shocked with this, basically what I said on the other thread where I had a question mark against Smith. My wildcard was Burger but i ‘m not bothered there. So we’re in for an exciting summer of recruitment, and I am expecting a few players coming in with EFL experience and a touch of quality at L2 level. Reckon Jim already had irons in the fire before drawing up the released list. | | | |

I don't think so this is football and they have all been here before. McNulty as a player and a manager.. Every player would have been totally accepting I am sure. They will go with a boost to the CV and opportunities ahead should they want them.

Just as a thought on Pritchard, who I am personally sad to see leave. He featured at Wembley for Oldham before joining Dale and I wonder as to whether he feels that a step up to Div 2 is a step too far and may have asked to leave as I'm sure he won't be short of offers to remain in National League

Maybe a two for one offer with the brothers? Also Smith did not have a pre season and then picked up a couple of muscle related injuries. As TalkingSutty highlighted physically he has not looked right all season. Maybe with a good lead into next season he could show more. [Post edited 18 May 17:57]

| Dale Retained List on 17:53 - May 18 with 8910 views | beat_the_bishop | Agreed. It’s football, amazing but ruthless at the same time. Arguably, last weeks promotion has probably made their agents jobs a little easier. It’s easy to forget, with the likes of Pritch for example that they are happy to sign a 1 year deal. It’s tough in the lower leagues and a lot just take it one season at time. A few bad injuries or management changes and before you know it you are far down the rung. On a separate note. Currently holidaying with my family. Boateng and Felix from York are here too. It’s a good job we went up or they would feel the full force of my dad bod running bomb into the pool! Also here is Courtney Senior, really nice lad with nothing but good to say about his stay at Dale. And his career is a really good example of right place, right time, right management, right agent etc. all the stars need to align. I look forward to following the parting players careers, they earned their soft spot in my heart. | | | |

| Dale Retained List on 19:12 - May 18 with 8441 views | 49thseason | "Out of contract players leaving the club ".. it doesn't mean that some were not offered a new contract which they turned down...Barlow for example has never really settled anywhere, some may want to try to move closer to family, some may already have a deal elsewhere lined up...clearly some have not made the most of the opportunity and probably realised they were likely to be surplus to requirements.. Professional sport is ruthless. I imagine Jim already has targets in mind, possibly he has had conversations with some of them, Good luck to the leavers, lets see what the future has to offer.. | | | |

I expected 8 of the 10, but I must be honest, like many others, I was surprised in seeing Pritchard and Barlow going, Pritchard had a degree of quality and I thought both of them would be squad players, who could do a job went ask to do so. Offering Corey Edwards a deal is sensible, in that if he moves to another club, we will get a fee due to his age and if he stops, he as ability to play a part in the team this season. Humbles is interesting, in that he has the ability, but McNulty allowed him to go on loan to Altrincham, were he was popular with the fans. So will he loaned out again or involved in the squad this coming season, we will have to see.
| Dale Retained List on 19:53 - May 18 with 8211 views | SaxonDale | I’m only slightly surprised by Burger’s departure. With the EFL regulations around squad sizes, I thought he could have been a decent squad player while still not counting towards the 22. I’m sure many of those released will find clubs at National League level, and a huge thanks goes to all of them for the role they played this season. I think Smith has made a decent impact coming off the bench, although you could argue his skill set is a bit too similar to Hendo’s in what is already a limited squad. As others have said, it’ll be easier to judge him after a full pre-season. His inclusion in the starting XI away at York suggests McNulty rates him highly as a slightly different option. The squad looks lean, but it’s full of quality, and if KG stays then we’ll have kept the nucleus of the side intact. I’m also hopeful we’ll see improved versions of Bilongo and Francis — as well as Smith — after a full pre-season. Edit- also suspect Humbles will join Alty for a nominal undisclosed fee over the summer. [Post edited 18 May 19:54]

| Dale Retained List on 21:53 - May 18 with 7871 views | Daley_Lama | To all departing players, as a fan i can only say ‘thank-you’ for playing for Rochdale in my favourite ever season. Big part, little part, you are part of the most amazing season in living memory. The vast majority of you i hope find football in EFL or NL. As fans of Dale we don’t often get to see good players leave after a successful season but appreciate this is the harsh reality of football life. Good luck and hope you visit Spotland again in the future to a warm welcome. | |

| Dale Retained List on 05:29 - May 19 with 7475 views | TalkingSutty | Well done Jim, not a easy job to move players on and dismantle a band of brothers. It was a squad compiled to get us out of the National League though so it was mission accomplished and good luck to all those leaving, a big thank you also. The squad wasn't lacking in talent but it's biggest asset was it's togetherness, dogged spirit and never say die attitide. That's what eventually dragged us over the line because the last couple of months hasn't been an enjoyable watch, it's been nerve shredding and probably life reducing due to stressful last gasp escapes. The game at Wembley highlighted the need for more quality all over the pitch, we were second best to Boreham Wood for most of it. The only surprise was offering Smith a new contract but i understand the sentiments behind it, there's also the possibilty that a good pre-season will sort out his fitness issues and he's already proved he knows where the net is. I thought we had too many players who could 'do a job' but lacked the extra quality/ fitness to hold down a place in the starting eleven and pressurise our perceived best eleven. So more quality in the squad next season will increase the competition for starting places and also the need for those in posession of the shirt to perform at a high standard week in week out. The manager has now given himself the scope to do that with his released list, so i'm very happy with the decisions made. | | | |
| Dale Retained List on 14:44 - May 19 with 6798 views | Dale_4_Life | 12 weeks until the opening EFL League 2 Saturday. Its a huge gap now between the recent season end and the first competitive opening game on Saturday 15th August. It is still 6 weeks until footballing contracts end (June 30th) and approximately 7 weeks before the players report back for training around the 6th July. It does give Jim time for a well earned break whilst also coming up with his new recruitment plan for the EFL challenge. Are we still taking player recruitment advice from our data analysis contacts?. | | | |

The first competitive games will be before League 2 starts, as the Carabao Cup first round is on the weekend of Saturday 8th August. However, if Crystal Palace win the Europa Conference League next week, us and York (along with Tranmere and Crawley) will have to take part in preliminary round ties in order to make the numbers balance as the Carabao Cup progresses. This is because a Palace win means nine English clubs will be in European competition next season, which has a knock-on effect on the Carabao Cup as they don't enter until round three. This affected Oldham and Barnet last year. Those ties will be before the first round, so potentially on Saturday 1st August, or maybe Tuesday 4th August. If Palace lose in next week's final, I don't think the preliminary round is needed as there will be one less team in Europe, meaning the numbers will work without need for a preliminary round. It's all explained here:
