As noted right at the start, Hughes and Savage were always going to be the main reasons we had nothing to fear from Carlisle and Forest Green. The two games against Carlisle illustrated how Hughes is tactically inept.

Although they were better v Dale than Carlisle were, FGR were simply not good enough to avoid defeat to us, twice. Savagetastic.

Gateshead announced yesterday that he was leaving as the club couldn't meet his demands for resources, training and playing budgets. With a fanbase of c 1,000 at best they will struggle next year now. They'd be better off merging with the larger South Shields and creating a stronger club south of the Tyne.

Just like we appreciated the sage advice of those who advocated merging with bury, or Oldham, not long since, to create a "stronger club in north east Manchester" ? There's only one response to such ideas...

Have a read of this history story about how Gateshead FC and South Shields have been the same club on at least 2 occasions in their history. South Shields moved on two occasions to form a Gateshead based club. The two are so intertwined it isn't a bizarre idea at all and not the same as Dale, Oldham and Bury creating a new North East Manchester club. I know some Gateshead fans and they wouldn't object. Their club is struggling, they don't own their ground and they can't get the locals to support them. History may well come round again. Their decision of course. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

That's well remembered. The person who first aired the idea was Ian Stott, the Chairman of Oldham circa 1998. He said the way forward might be for Oldham, bury and Dale to merge to create a new club called Manchester North End. At the time, Latics were spiraling downwards from their Premier League days and were 3rd tier under Warnock I think. I think bury were tier 2 then under Ternent. We were in the depths of the Barrow era so could have emerged as the biggest winners from such a deal. Yet no-one was remotely interested. The story never made it past the Manchester Evening News inside back page as I recall.

Similarly, Thames Valley Royals merger of Reading, Swindon & Oxford was given short shrift. Think that was a Robert Maxwell idea.

What that history tells us is that despite a couple of attempts to amalgamate, there's been sustained and determined effort to maintain two separate identities As you say, it's their call, but unless the character of the inhabitants of those two places has changed, history tells us it'd be a false move [Post edited 29 May 16:27]
