World Cup anyone? 16:59 - Jun 11 with 55324 viewsYorkshire_Dale

With all the comings and goings and excitement at San Spotty,is anyone getting remotely interested in what is just about to start over the pond?

I think, looking at the England squad we have a really good chance.....there is a depth of talent without doubt.

Must say though I am not getting the purple haze about the competition and prefer to follow what's going on locally.

Just hope Haiti do well.

What do others think?

Yes, really looking forward to it, can't wait to watch plenty of games.Great to see a couple of lifelong Dale fans at the England friendly in Orlando last night, the television cameras picked them out. I'd love to see England win it but expecting probably a last eight or semi final elemination, which wont be bad when you take into consideration the weather conditions. The glass half full brigade derided the World Cup when it was hosted in Russia and also Qatar, both were great tournaments. If not England then i want Argentina to win it and Messi to light up the tournament. I predict Japan could be dark horses to get to the later stages.

One of the "lifelong Dale fans", seen giving a hearty rendition of "God Save Our Team", started out as a Liverpool fan, until re-educated

Well, that first match was a good start.....some decent stuff from both teams and plenty to talk about. More red cards than goals.

Could be an interesting competition.

Ee. I wasn't impressed wìth RSA at all, Yorks. The epitome of these extra teams bringing.nothing to the party and watering down the competion.
I love an underdog but 20-odd of them?!

After initially being overun and going an early goal down I thought SOuth Africa did ok without troubling Mexico.....however they did contribute to their own downfall thereafter.

England might end up playing Mexico if things go well.....I think "we would have em"

Three red cards in 45 minutes.
There were only four in total in the 2018 and 2022 tournaments.
Refereeing clampdown? More use of VAR?
Be interesting to see if this trend continues.

More use of VAR! they will be replacing ref’s with artificial intelligence in no time.
What will the crowd get annoyed at then.

I hope none of you got up at 4 am this morning to watch Česko flap and flounder against Korea. Crikey bobs, it was a prime example of why this new extended version is tripe!

Looking forward to Brazil v Morocco. Interesting to see how those two teams have evolved: from Brazil's downturn and Morocco's decent showing at the last World Cup;.

I thought Canada look good against Bosnia, USA win against Paraguay was a good result, but having said, I don't know good paraguay are. The times of the kickoffs are a bugger, 2 am, any sensible person are a sleep and dreaming the sweetest dreams possible.

Paraguay were sixth in qualifying although that was on goal difference they were equal on points with three other teams

Thought the same, towering header.

Was half expecting the Swiss Stones to score from the last corner.

Surely the Swiss keeper could have saved that: or, at least, tried to. He even seems to pull his hand away. Bit odd that.

Brazil / Morocco was a good watch with a fair result.

Haiti v Sweatys lacked that quality. Haiti better on the ball but went behind to a deflected goal. They all count. Sweatys defended well but had to. The first Group C game showed the best two teams in that group by far, although the Scots being top of the table tonight helps them, for now.

Bed now. Hope the convicts lose v Türkiye.

"And only as far as Casey Pettit......"

Scotland lucky in the end, second best.

I thought Brazil's goal was very similar to Rodney's play-off goal v Scunny. It was almost as good.

RSA was awful, a few lads are playing in my son's Sunday League team with a better first touch and pass than some of those RSA lads!

You must be very disappointed. Like Scotland they must now be odds on to progress to the knockout stage...again.

Really enjoying this world cup, some very good games, great goals, fantastic stadiums and big crowds. It's really kicked up a notch now with the big name strikers all finding their shooting boots, Messi was brilliant for Argentina. England tonight, a decent performance and a win would be nice.

Picking defenders who aren’t that great at defending/haven’t played regularly/aren’t actually defenders is a unique way of starting a tournament.

And the best defender in the squad is left on the bench amongst the rest of the defenders who we’re told can all do a job at full back without actually being a preferred choice there.

Good game to watch though.

Very poor defensively. Stones jumps in allows the pull back and great finish. Second the whole team too deep and Konsa does not go with the player. No idea why Guehi is not starting.

We will have more chances, especially when Saka and Rashford come on against tired defenders.
