26/27 squad 18:52 - Jul 4 with 4701 views442Dale

Think this is currently where we are, Chaff or someone will be able to add contract end dates/anyone missed:

GK:

Central Defenders:
EEL, Beckwith

Fullbacks/wingbacks:
Moss, TAR, Bilongo

Midfielders:
East, Gilmour, Pettit, Francis

Forwards (inc. no.10s/wide players)
Dieseruvwe, Rodney, Henderson, Hayes, Hannant.

Of course some of those can play different roles (Moss and Hannant for example) but it’s pretty much as things stand today. Need at least one central defender and a keeper of course, but be interesting to see where Watson makes additions elsewhere.

Beckwith is an interesting one for me. Gem of a player, but where does he fit in a back 4? Can he do LCB alongside EEL? Is he mobile enough at LB for a high intensity system? I think he was TOTS LB before we signed him wasn't he?

There is also the potential of Edwards.

We still need a lot of players, although what positions will depend on the formation we will be playing.

Hayes has addressed a massive pace and direct running threat either as a winger or number 10. Henderson extending his contract should fill a Vertu trophy and depth bench role. I would still hope that we can secure a better back up/challenger to Disweruvwe and that he probably would not make the bench is everyone else is fit.

One of the biggest question marks is over the choice of keepers.

I have no info concerning Div 2 usage of keepers last year, but Jim took a complete flier last season by not having a second keeper on the bench, and got away with it!

I can`t see this happening again. So choice of keepers is likely to be critical (Age, experience, fitness etc). Also Whatmuff had a huge influence on our game plan.

I'd like to see Hayes played in his best position, if not then we are diluting his game and not maximising his skill set. Has Hayes proved himself playing as a 10 or is it just fans assumption that he is better there than out wide so we will give him a go? Hayes receiving the ball out wide and skinning the defender or cutting inside is a defenders nightmare. I'm not a fan of signing a player and then playing him out of position to accomodate deficiencies in other areas of the pitch. We've seen it in the past with Andrew and Hendo, playing in midfield and even full back positions, it all gets a bit daft.

He should be free to play where he can find his own space, which may well be out wide but he could also benefit from playing closer to Mani at other times

He appears to have enough of a football brain to make those decisions

I'm hoping we bring somebody in with more goalscoring prowess to boost our forward line. I don't see Hayes as a number 10, he is too diminutive and lightweight for that position. I accept it's all about opinions though. If that's how some perceive Hayes then we need to sign another player to fill the role that i'm assuming Watson signed him for, playing out wide.

It's a simple matter of pace and ability to put the ball away, as well as creating chances for others. If coming inside occasionally creates an opportunity for him, it'd be daft not to do that

If we play with two 10s then the wide players will be wing backs. If we play 433 one of the midfield three could be a midfield off the top as in the old school number ten and then we would have two wide players.

The problem is that a number 10 role has morphed from someone playing off a main striker such as what Sheringham did in a 4411 formation to two wider attackers in a 343 formation. The name of a role/position can be different depending on a formation.

I suppose the friendlies will tell us what formation Watson will play. One thing that we can guarantee is that Hayes will be a key player whatever the formation is.

Yeah, we’ve never really played with proper wingers the last few years under McNulty. First season it was 4-3-3 with the wider players linking with the centre forward (usually Mitchell) then 3-4-3, as you say the wingbacks provided real width.

With Hayes there’s the option for him to play as a proper winger during games, but unless we change to a 4-4-2 he won’t be staying wide all the time.

Hoping we can look at a formation that utilises the talent we have in central midfield, East has already proven to be very effective in an advanced role in a three.

14 players who you would consider first team pushing for regular starts.

The fewest in number I can remember (July 6th) for quite a while.

The main reason is 14 released. 10 Dale and 4 back to parent clubs. It certainly gives scope and headroom for a flurry of signings as and when the right players are found.

I would like to think, that we will hopefully get people in this week, before the trip to Spain and crucially the pre-season game next Tuesday 14th July at FC Utd, as it stands we have no GK. Does anyone know, if we have signed Laurence Maguire or is it just a rumour.

I am surprised we have only four pre-season games.

If and when we sign players, they will be announced via the normal channels, and then everyone will know.

I hope the manager realises we don't have a keeper before we play FCUM next Tuesday, or Josh might have to get his gloves on again...

Josh last played Div 2 football with Barrow 2 years ago, and at 39 is 2 years younger than Hendo. Also he can self-coach.

With the exception of Centre Midfield, the squad looks very thin at present. Feels like we're well behind our rivals. Quite concerning to me despite the inevitable calls for patience.

Would be a bit of a concern to me if we find that the team we field against FCUM consists mainly of Trialists when I thought there was some fantastic system being used to identify the sort of player that we need to succeed in Div 2

These friendlies seem to start sooner in preseason every year. Teams used to do a lot more running at this time of year but now it’s all game time.
A lot of teams are in the same boat; Halifax used at least eight trialists over two halves last Saturday.
Different level I know but they won’t have a settled team for at least a month.

Our friendly at FC United is three days later than the first friendly at the same venue last year.
