Squad as it stands 14:11 - Jul 3 with 2002 viewsheywooddale

Just trying to get my head around what the squad currently looks like.
This is my understanding of the players we now have on the books (feel free to correct me if i have got anything wrong)

Goalkeepers
Josh Lillis
Matt Edwards

Defence
Sam Minihan (RB)
Peter Cavanagh (RB)
Phil Edwards (R/CB) ???
Joe Rafferty (R/CB) Also used in midfield somewhere
Marcus Holness (R/CB)
Neil Byrne (R/CB)
Ryan Edwards (CB)
Rhys Bennett (CB)
Stephen Jordan (C/LB)
Kevin Mcintyre (LB/M)

Midfield
Bryan Barry-Murphy (CM)
Andrew Tutte (CM)
Jason Kennedy (CM)
Luke Watson (CM)?
Joe Thompson (R/LM)??

Forwards
Reece Gray (ST)
Godwin Abadaki (ST)
Ashley Grimes (ST)
George Donnely (ST)

? = Unsure of his exact position
?? = Waiting on contract decision
??? = Subject to Medical

We don't half look thin in the middle of the park at the moment.

Holden was released.

When I was your age, I used to enjoy the odd game of tennis. Or was it golf?

A few of the former Accy players can play further up the park too - so I don't know if JC has plans down that road?

I think we're still 2 wingers and another CF away from completion, Grimes will stay until we have another striker signed up id guess, just hope JK or Tutte don't leave on the 30th August.

Life is a game of fate.

A big guy up top will sort the striking positions IMO, presuming Grimes stays.

Another central midfielder is required (craney, if fit?) and a couple of versatile midfielders to play the wide(ish) roles that JC employs.

Grimes will stay for as long as long as we don't have a replacement, but no chance of him starting the season with us.

Wouldnt Thompson now be on a week to week contract or as he walked away completely..

My all time favourite Dale player Mr Lyndon Symmonds

Unless I've missed it, then Phil Edwards has not signed yet. The club have been keen to mention when discussing Phil Edwards that his move is reliant on a medical. Dunno whether he's still carrying a knock from last season, but I'd have assumed that if he was fit and ready at this time, he'd have done his medical and been made all official looking.

looking mighty light in midfield there methinks...

Don't miss the donut by looking through the hole.

Looking at the original list there are , I think , 21 names on it .

4 of these are youngsters unlikely to be on big contracts , or to play a large role for a full season I suspect , and at least 2 of the listed defenders will I assume be shipped out . That's a core at present of only 15 senior pros , and the deficit at present is clearly up front and midfield .

It wouldn't surprise me now , therefore , given those numbers and obvious shortages to see up to 4 new midfielders come in (1 x central and up to 3 x wide) and a strong striker , with Joe Thompson , if he signs , perhaps playing more as an auxilary striker , reading between the lines of a recent Coleman interview . Personally I've often wondered along I think with one or two other contributors , if that role might be what Thompson's best suited to , and if anyone can improve strikers its Coleman , who has done sterling jobs at Accy with the likes of Gornall and Symes .

A squad of 19/20 senior pros (permanent + loan) supplemented by 4 youngsters feels about right to me , and is , I believe the kind of resource that Keith Hill generally worked with over a season .

According to the interview with Jimmy Bell on the OS Rafferty will be used more as a full back and midfielder rather than a centre back this season.

So that adds a bit more depth to the midfield, but i'd imagine he will be used more as cover if he isn't experienced there.
