Im bringing a few lads up for the Luton match in November. We are having a night out in Manchester after the game. I'm in charge of planning it, so i am after some help as i don't know the night life in Manchester.
The requirements from the lads are.
A few pubs that play 80/90's music none of that bop bop stuff.
A pub that serves proper ale (not larger)
A few pubs that actually contain women and not 100% men.
A nightclub 80/90's music (Chicago Rock Cafe) type....of club or Madchester type music.
A decent Kebab at the end of the night.

That’s the point chalky.
Luton is by far the worst night out in the country.
A few decent pubs but some of the clientele.
No night clubs.
Females are rarer than a dodo on a night out in Luton.

Presumably train gets in at Piccadily so Port Street would be a great place to start - first thing I thought when I read the OP. Can't fault your recommendations AandD. If you're coming from Victoria, and fancy a cheap but half-decent pint to start with, could do worse than the Wellington, in Shambles Square. Usually a decent atmosphere there too, if the weather's ok for nosying about outside |  |

If you have time for a pre-match scoop, you could nip into Port Street. Will be in touch tomorrow ref the Victoria area. NB The recommendations will only be on beer quality and pubs. Caveat emptor for the rest. The Marble Arch is a must and the Angel used to be great too. More gals in the former than the latter, but "alehouses" and "lots of girls" on a Venn diagram represent a small union. I fear your mates may suffer a similar fate? Night clubs? Fuhgeddaboudit. Not my specialisation. | |

Sir Ralph Abercromby is a great pub, loads of ale choices too, always got some form of sport on the tele. Nice dukebox full of 80/90s.
It's right behind Albert Schloss which has plenty of women.

That's the one. It was located a short distance away but when the area was cleared it was transported brick by brick, beam by beam, to its current location
Pint of Sam Smith's (admittedly not to everyone's taste) can be had for about £2 or maybe just over - won't get better value in Manchester and there's always a lively crowd outside - including groups of females topping up their levels before moving on | |

Forecast's pretty mild on Saturday, and there's some decent garden umbrella-type shelter if it's raining. I've sat outside during a downpour...

i thought it had moved!! i have a recollection of being in there around 1993 and it was further towards where Marks and Sparks was, away from Victoria!

Sinclair's and the Old Wellington were moved as part of the city centre redevelopment following the 1996 bombing outside M&S on Corporation Street. They had been in a rather enclosed concrete square behind M&S. It wasn't the first time the pubs had been moved - they had been shifted to the square behind M&S in the 70's as part of the Arndale development.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr - typed out the reply below (not word for word) last night and somehow it disappeared before posting so I'm typing this in Word and copy/pasting (too tired to retype last night).
Firstly, there isn’t a bad recommendation on this thread beer/venue wise, and I've also eaten at the Old Wellington quite a few times - has good scoff as well as beer.
As promised, below is a list of the GBG pubs in and around Victoria area/Northern Quarter going towards town in alphabetical order. They are pubs which consistently sell good ale and are recommended for that alone. One last caveat — this is from the 2018 GBG. Sure the 2019 guide will be out now or soon but I don’t get it til Christmas so info may not be bang up to date, but will be mostly reliable. Check them out on-line or on Tripadvisor as well for more info.
Britons Protection 50 Great Bridgewater Street
Jennings Cumberland, Robbies Unicorn, House beer (Thwaites-brewed) + 2 changing beers sourced locally. Grade II listed 200 year old.
Café Beermoth 40a Spring Gardens
7 changing beers sourced nationally. Styled on a Belgian café. Good choice of foreign bottled beers too.
Hare and Hounds 46 Shudehill
Holts Bitter, Robbies Dizzy Blond and what is becoming the ubiquitous Sharp’s Doom bar. Grade II listed with nationally important historic interior. Bit of a wild card this one. It’s in the area but usually older clientele.
Marble Arch Inn 73 Rochdale Road ………….. an absolute gem and must visit.
Marble Pint, Manchester Bitter, Lagonda IPA, Earl Grey IPA; 6 changing beers sourced nationally
Home of Marble beers, this fanous real ale pub is a 10 min walk from City Centre (less from Victoria). The brewery’s own ales are available alongside two guests + a range of bottled beers. The listed building has many interesting features — the sloping mosaic floor leading you inexorably (CAMRA’s words not mine) to the bar and the glazed tile walls add to the splendour of the interior.
Micro Bar Unit FC16 Arndale market — another wildcard in the Arndale centre which is literally a stall — closes at 6:30 and most of the lasses you’ll see will still be shopping!
3 changing beers sourced nationally often Dan’s brewery, Phoenix and Wild Fox
Pie and Ale Units 1-2, Northern Quarter Arcade, Lever Street. Modern bar showcases a range of largely micro-brewed ales, plus a low priced house ale Yippee pie ale, together with a mouth-watering selection of pies ……….. might be a good pit stop pre-kebab depending on your food/drink strategy?
House beer (Wells); 5 changing beers sourced nationally.
Smithfield Market Tavern, 37 Swan Street
Leased by Blackjack brewery and featuring their ales and guests — 6 changing beers sourced nationally.
Terrace 43 Thomas Street — modern bar eclectic clientele (even more so if your crew turn up!) Good food is served and live music plays most evenings.
Thornbridge IPA (NB strong); 3 changing beers sourced nationally.
If you do gravitate towards Piccadilly, Port Street beer house, Port Street worth a visit. Not cheap and has some loopy strong beers on draught and bottled if that’s what you like.
7 changing beers sourced nationally.
“Mecca” for beer lovers from far and wide. Bottled beers from US, Belgium, Holland and beyond. Seating on two floors.
Don't know if you are planning a crawl or how many you want to visit/where you will end up (which club). If you let me know your route I can check out if any others would fit too. Have fun and let us know the verdicts of the places you visited. Needless to say a lot of them will be rammed on Saturday night. | |
