There's been some strange activity abound in League One over the past few days. Rotherham have sold their long-serving captain Lee Frecklington back to a League Two side (albeit the town his family live in), as well as their first choice goalkeeper, and their top scorer Keiffer Moore has returned to Ipswich, before being loaned out elsewhere. And Rotherham have replaced Moore by spending an undisclosed fee on... not-so-prolific Michael Smith from Bury. I've perused the Bury board a few times over the past few months and this transfer seems akin to us managing to get a fee for George Donnelly. Remarkably, Rotherham will be the 26-year-old's 14th club.

Moore has signed a three-and-a-half year deal at Barnsley!

When I was your age, I used to enjoy the odd game of tennis. Or was it golf?

Oh, I thought he'd gone on loan there! Still, Smith seems like a poor replacement for him from Rotherham's point of view.

He is strong but otherwise garbage and I have no idea why they have signed him.

It is Rotherham though so you assume there is financial chicanery involved.

Now that is the definition of irony!

Now that is the definition of irony!

Dictionary.com defines it as

1. the use of words to convey a meaning that is the opposite of its literal meaning:
the irony of her reply, “How nice!” when I said I had to work all weekend.
2. Literature.
a technique of indicating, as through character or plot development, an intention or attitude opposite to that which is actually or ostensibly stated.
(especially in contemporary writing) a manner of organizing a work so as to give full expression to contradictory or complementary impulses, attitudes, etc., especially as a means of indicating detachment from a subject, theme, or emotion.
3. Socratic irony.
4. dramatic irony.
5. an outcome of events contrary to what was, or might have been, expected.
6. the incongruity of this.
7. an objectively sardonic style of speech or writing.

Feel free to take it up with the website but I am not sure my comment meets any of those.

What does the dictionary say about ‘financial chicanery and spending money you haven’t really got’?

When I was your age, I used to enjoy the odd game of tennis. Or was it golf?

Wigan have signed James Vaughan from Sunderland.

Seems as though Sunderland have cut their losses and sold him for less than they paid.

In which case there's probably no share of the fee going to bury.
