Sandy Lane Nostalgia 16:24 - Dec 22 with 3216 views | jonahwhereru | Just watched Paint Your Wagon, and it made me nostalgic for the Sandy Lane song set to Wanderin Star. A song that was the best in football in that generation. I have two questions on it if anyone can help. Can anyone quote all the words to it, all this time later? And Who can lay claim to having put the words together? Whoever did put it together should be in the Dale Supporters Hall Of Fame. Loved those days.

I used to go over from time to time then. Alec Lindsay was outstanding , Bobby Collins, Ray Pointer, two good players on the way down. Tommy Claxton from Whitworth was playing then as was Vinnie Leech before he came to the Dale. Jimmy Kerr was the next Colin Bell but got a serious knee injury that finished him at about 21. They had a fantastic right winger called Greg Farrell, he was like a fast Norman Whitehead but a bit of a play boy apparently. [Post edited 23 Dec 2019 14:44]

Thanks for that. When he was in the mood he was a real handful. Fast and direct. Like most wingers - when he wasn't in the mood he didn't do a great deal. He had pop star looks as well so I could see how he could get distracted. Jammy bugger. [Post edited 23 Dec 2019 14:43]

That was in the days when Rochdale and Bury fixtures were designed so that mostly they were never both at home on the same Saturdays. I think quite a lot of Dale regulars used to pop over to Bury to watch what was then a very decent team. Not many Bury supporters bothered to repay the vist to Spotland though.

I used to go all over then this area then, all the big local clubs plus Oldham and Bury. Football was cheap in those days and you could just chose a game and pay at the gate. You could also stand wherever you felt like, more or less. [Post edited 24 Dec 2019 17:22]

Sandy Lane Nostalgia on 11:20 - Dec 26 with 1560 views | mikehunt | I’m guessing all our songs were/are merely adaptations of songs sung by other clubs. The only one I can think of, that may be uniquely Dale, is the clown (Entrance of the Gladiators) one.

A few use that. Linked to Arsenal when they kept playing at Wembley in yellow in the 70s.
