That's the expectation bias at work. We feel as though we should beat teams near the bottom so when we do, it's not remarkable or memorable. But we remember the losses because our expectation has failed, causing a sense of grievance. The reverse is true of beating teams at the top.
If anyone wants to prove me wrong, feel free to have a go, but the few times I've looked at the stats it's very clear that our results are biased towards more points from lower clubs and fewer points from higher clubs. It couldn't not be over any reasonable sample size. |

11 or 12 years of mediocrity?
I wish. It's 30 years we've been mediocre to poor, with the exception of the two Championship promotion seasons and even for one of those we went up by the skin of our teeth with a despised manager, duly followed by a horrific relegation season. |

Also, it's not the 50s any more so no one cares.
Most people now in their sweat pants and hoodies look like they're homeless regardless of means. Incredible to look at old photos of previous generations of my family from the 30s to the 60s, all dapper and nicely togged up in their whistles etc. And none of them were especially well off. Everyone can probably say the same. |

Last season we lost ten games by more than a one goal margin.
This season, with 70% of games played, we've lost five games by more than a one goal margin.
So we're actually doing a fair bit better on that count. We're also doing better on the reverse metric: last season we won six games by more than one goal, this season we're already at five. |

You wouldn't think it judging by all the catastrophising, but excluding the promotion seasons we are doing better at this stage of this season than every season in the past twelve barring 21/22. |
