Toner comes to Spotland
as a player with bags of experience at this level,
without perhaps ever hitting the heights that he could
have done as a player. There's been spells of brilliance
in his career to date but form at times has been patchy,
and he'll be looking to Dale boss Keith Hill to continue
his excellent record at getting the best out of his
players. He
is primarily a central midfield player, but he has been
used on the left wing during his career. But it is in
central midfielder where he has had his best
performances during his career. Certainly at one stage,
Toner was considered good enough to be called up for the
full Northern Ireland squad, and he counts two
international caps against Spain and Italy amongst his
honours as a player, which have also featured captaining
the side at Under 21 level.
Since leaving Spurs,
he has had numerous spells with clubs at this level. A
two year spell at Leyton Orient was followed by a move
to Lincoln which was ended after a training ground bust
up with former Dale loanee Marcus Richardson which
resulted in Richardson's loan move to Spotland.
He's spent the last
three seasons at Grimsby, before being shown the door at
the end of the 2007-8 season. It was an up and down time
for him at Grimsby. Some performances were outstanding,
and he finished his second season as top scorer with
eight goals, but it's clear that inconsistency was again
an issue. Perhaps, with Town drifting around the mid to
lower half of the table during the past couple of years,
he lacked the motivation that a promotion push could
provide.
He has signed a one
year contract at Spotland which will see him remain at
Dale until the Summer of 2009.
