No appeal against Paynter’s ban
No appeal against Paynter’s ban
Monday, 21st Mar 2011 17:35 by Tim Whelan

Leeds have reluctantly decided that due to a lack of video evidence available from Saturday’s defeat at Sheffield United, there is no realistic chance of a successful appeal against Billy Paynter’s three match ban.

Paynter was sent off after an off-the ball clash with Shane Lowry towards the end of the game, and as there was only one camera filming the action, it didn’t capture the incident properly. Referee Michael Jones has admitted that he didn’t see it either, but he confirmed in his report that his assistant had seen an alleged head-butt.

Paynter denies this, and he can’t have hit Lowry that hard, as the Sheffield man was able to jump to his feet immediately and shart pushing Paynter. Leeds have asked Lowry to make a statement in Paynter’s defence, but Lowry declined, even though he was at Leeds for a three month loan spell last season.

Paynter will now miss the games against Nottingham Forest, Millwall, and Derby County, but Simon Grayson isn’t too downhearted. He told the official site "I'm disappointed that Billy will miss three games, but I'm confident in the players we have here." In other words, it’ll give someone else a chance, such as Mc.Cormack or Somma, and we might even be better off as a result.

Let's be honest, Billy Paynter won't be missed. Why Grayson picks him in front of Becchio or Sommer is anybody's guess!? Paynter looks totally unfit & off the pace. Even against Preston when he finally scored, he then missed a chance that my granny could have scored! I also don't rate Lichaj at all. He gets forward well, but his main job is to defend. How many times does he get caught massively out of position, once a Leeds attack has broken down?

He certainly looks a bit fat in that picture. I agree that he won't be missed, so it will probably be a blessing in disguise. He fight have scored a few in League One, but maybe the Championship is too high a level for him. Give me Somma any day.
