Saints have been reported to the Independent Football Ombudsman after the FA Cup tie with Man Utd.

Ironically Saints have been the subject of a complaint to the Independent Football Ombudsman from a Man Utd supporter about the Club failure to deal with the behaviour of Man Utd fans.

The complaine refers to the FA Cup tie in January and the failure of the clubs stewards to clear a number of United supporters who stood at the front of the away section thus blocking the view of United's own disabled fans sat in the front row of the stand.

The evidence of mis behavior by the Man Utd fans both on the stadium seating deck and the concourse underneath makes shocking reading and highlights the total disregard a large proportion of United fans have not just for the opposition stewards, Police and supporters but for their own fans as well.

After taking in the evidence the IFO found that Saints had taken reasonable precautions by having a lot more stewards and police on duty than was required, indeed having double the usual number needed in the away section and could not be held culpable for the extremes of behaviour by the visiting fans

Interesting link Nick, especially the third article..............

I can remember commenting to my 2 sons at the time and in the Echo that there seemed to be a major problem in the away section and that perhaps there were too many fans in that section.

Indeed if you consider 2 matches where you would have expected the away section to be full, it turns out that there were 4061 for the Pompey cup tie but 4243 for Man. U. which is about 4.5% higher, strange to say the least.

I noticed that both got reduced allocations to help with crowd control, I knew they were a bit lively in the away section in January but didnt realise there was so much hassle underneath etc
