Having lost their last five games Russell felt it was time to act. He said: "The fact is we won three in 20 games and that is relegation material. This shows that we are not afraid to make changes when they need to be made.
This time, we will go for a manager with experience, someone who knows the division and the kind of players he is dealing with."
Peters certainly fits the description having managed Preston for just over three years, winning the Third Division Championship in 1996.All of that experience will be required with just thirteen games left to transform a struggling squad from relegation candidates to survivors. His first game in charge will be a crucial six-pointer at home to fellow strugglers Bristol Rovers on Saturday.
Changing managers at this stage of the season represents a massive gamble, and this sort of panic measure must be viewed as a boost to our own chances of survival.However, Peters is a decent manager with a reputation for getting the best out of the players at his disposal - whether he can get enough out of them between now and the end of the season very much remains to be seen. |
