Swans Veterans Turn Out For Local Boy

Home > Story Index >Swans Veterans Turn Out For Local Boy

A past Swansea City XI will face Clydach Sports Football Club in aid of local boy Chris Rees. The match, to be played at Coed Gwilym Park next Sunday, 6th April (k.o. 2.00pm), has been arranged to help raise funds for Chris, who is terminally ill, with a view to granting his greatest wish of watching his favourite team, Manchester United, play at Old Trafford.

Despite being severely handicapped, teenager Chris is absolutely fanatical about football. He was due to attend the Wales vs Azerbaijan game in Cardiff, however he was too ill attend. Now his local community are rallying round to raise sufficient funds to make Chris's dream come true.

Event organiser John Davies, of the Vadre Hotel & Sports Bar, says: "We are hoping to raise £2,000 so that Chris and his family can spend some time together enjoying Chris's great passion - football."

A sum of £500 has already been raised through a combination of local business donations, raffles and the generosity of Vardre Hotel regulars. However, there is still a long way to go to reach the target.

"We can't charge people to watch Sunday's match but we are producing a programme and aim to raise money by selling as many as we can."

The fun doesn't stop at the end of the match, either. As soon as the final whistle blows it is straight back to the Vardre for a sports quiz, followed by live music in the form of local band Calypso.

Included in the Veterans' line-up are former favourites such as Wyndham Evans, Nigel Stevenson and Dave Stewart, as well as "Swansea Legend" Alan Curtis.

It promises to be a great day out - so if you can go then please turn up at Coed Gwilym Park to join in the fun. If you can't make it on the day but would still like to make a donation to Chris's cause then you can contact me either by phone (07773 723227) or by email (nigel.davies13@ntlworld.com) and I shall ensure your contribution is received by the right people.

See you all there…
