Holt Remains One Of Kenny's Most Wanted

Holt Remains One Of Kenny's Most Wanted?

An interesting snippet arrived with us this morning concerning long term Swansea target Grant Holt who was reported to have signed an extension to his contract at Rochdale last week.

Rochdale's official site reported that Holt had signed a one year extension to his contract at Spotland with the player himself commenting "I've seen the reports regarding moving clubs and I know bids have come in and like I've said on more than one occasion it's nice that other clubs show an interest . But it's fair play to Rochdale, they didn't want to sell me and I'm happy to sign and stay here for the next two years.

"If the club would have accepted a bid then I suppose I would have had to listen to what they had to say, but it never got that far and I'm pleased to be here."

However, news hits us this morning that the signing of this contract has not necessarily killed the deal dead in the water and Kenny Jackett has already contacted Rochdale to see how the land lies with regards a potential transfer.

Jackett and his counterpart at Rochdale, Steve Parkin, had a conversation yesterday morning on Jackett's return to Swansea following his course last week. And it is believed that a potential transfer to White Rock could still be on if Swansea come up with an increased offer for the front man.

Holt's previous contract was believed to have included a clause that some of the transfer fee would go to Holt meaning that a bid of £300,000 was required to make it viable for the League Two side to sell but that may not now be an issue with the signing of the new deal potentially taking that stumbling block out of the way.

Our source tells us that a bid of £175,000 may now be enough for Rochdale to give the Swans permission to open talks with Holt who it is still believed would love to become a Swansea City player. With a sell on clause to Sheffield Wednesday still there for any future sale of Holt, this is the figure that our source believes would be enough for Rochdale to sell and leave them enough to strengthen and allow for the loss of their leading scorer.

There also comes a time in all lower division clubs where the bank will also have a say in the ins and outs of a football club. With the bank naturally looking to ensure that what is still a business remains profitable any public bids for players will naturally attract a say from themselves.

The big question is whether Kenny Jackett is able to persuade Huw Jenkins to part with an increased sum of money for a player who he thinks will make the perfect strike partner for Lee Trundle. That could yet prove to be a bigger stumbling block than any contract that Grant Holt has in his possession.

Time will tell but when information is received then expect it to be passed on. No matter how much it may wind the Rochdale fans up! Will the deal happen? Too many ifs and buts at the moment but don't assume it's been killed off just yet.
