Blast From The Past - Ivor Allchurch

Blast From The Past - Ivor Allchurch

Swansea rival of John Charles when a schoolboy he grew up to be the golden boy of welsh Football. The fair haired genius played the beautiful game with style brilliant at pinpoint passes to the striker out front superb ball control and never rushed. Ivor is the one hundred of the football league legends. in total he made 694 league appearences and he scored 251 goals. He made his debut for the swans in 1949. He died at the age of 67 in 1997 at home in his beloved Swansea

I had the pleasure of seein most of Ivor's Vetch games in the 50's. When he picked up the ball on the halfway line the crowd would go dead quiet in eager anticipation of what was to come.A breathtaking run beating three or four defenders followed by an unstoppable shot at goal. I recall the depression that settled on the whole town (not City then) when the Evening Post announced he was off to Newcastle Utd. IVOR.....the golden haired Swans wonder boy....RIP.

Ivor Allchurch, In my opinion along with John Charles and possibly Ryan Giggs were the top 3 players ever produced by Wales. Ivor was the complete footballer, he had It all, Instant control of the ball with either foot, the best passer In the game (Yes!better than Johnny Haynes)very rarely failed to find his man, be It a long pass or a short one (The sort of pass that Beckham & Co produce about 3 or 4 times a game he produced all game long In most games he played) A rocket of a shot In both feet, It made no difference to Ivor, most of His goals were scored from mid-field, very few In the box.

Was Picked In the All time best Newcastle United X1, The Mid-Field chosen was as follows,

J.Milburn,Terry McDermott,I.Allchurch,C.Waddle.

Ivor and Len, members of my family and Ivor and Esme, baby sat me very often. Not only a great player but a gentleman, on and off the field. Died 9-7 97, gone but missed and never forgotton.
