Knight Fever As The Swans Head Back To Cardiff

Jack fans have already partied in Cardiff once this season and on May 27th every single one of them will be hoping for a party to celebrate a much bigger event - that being promotion to the championship.

Two goals from Leon Knight fired the Swans to a second Millennium Stadium appearance - just six weeks to the day since the first one - to kill off the Bees who find themselves a losing semi finalist for the second season running.

The game is usually full of omens and the fact that Brentford have been in six play offs and lost them all is one of them but the second one is that on the previous five occasions their conquerors have gone onto win promotion that season - let's hope that is a statistic that they are banding around still on May 28th.

Following Thursday's 1-1 draw at Swansea, Kenny Jackett opted to add the physical presence of Kris O'Leary to his side at the expense of Shaun MacDonald in what was otherwise a totally unchanged sixteen and it allowed the Swans to line up as follows

Big Willy

Tatey Kev Monk Sam

Big Leon OTJ KOL Robbo

Little Leon Rory

Bench: Murphy, Williams, LT10, Bayo, Forbesy

We knew that Brentford were likely to come at us quickly and they almost took the lead inside thirty seconds following a break down the left but as the ball rolled across it was a weak shot that Willy was able to gather with some ease much to the relief of Jacks all over. And that was perhaps a sign that this was to be Swansea's day - proven by them taking the lead just eight minutes later. A long ball (who said it didn't work ;-) ) evaded everyone (although it may have brushed Fallon's hair) and as the Brentford defenders dithered in popped Leon Knight to lift the ball over Nelson and into the back of the net. Just what Swansea wanted.

The next ten minutes were pivotal in the game. Andy Robinson dived in at the edge of the box and was somewhat fortunate to avoid a yellow card to the displeasure of the home crowd. Just thirty seconds later he was diving in again and this time was booked but the Sky commentators - and the home crowd - clearly believed it should have been a second booking but it wasn't to be. Brentford had three or four free kicks in dangerous positions at this stage but all of them failed to clear our defensive wall to our relief. And one nil became two on the quarter hour mark as Britton's perfect through ball found Knight who powered a second goal past Nelson and give the Swans real breathing space.

And for the rest of the half that had taken the sails out of Brentford. Yes they battled but they were looking a shadow of the team that took the game to us for 45 minutes on Thursday night. Austin had Rankin in his pocket - allowing him out only to be booked for dissent - whilst a very strange referee booked Fallon for being foot high when far worse had gone unpunished. He was not endearing himself to the home crowd for sure.

Half time came and went and with it Brentford used the last two of their substitutions knowing that it was all or nothing for them. And they came at us - and came at us strong. But what they found was a determined Swansea backline backed up by one of Willy's best performances of the season with impeccable handling on all occasions. Knight came off to a chorus of "cheat cheat" in reference to him being fouled by Nelson on Thursday but his work had been done and he had scored the goals to take Swansea to Cardiff.

Williams, Trundle and Fallon all came close as the game edged towards the ninety (or ninety nine if you allow for stoppages) minute mark but there was only one victor as Swansea did the most professional job they could do and Leon Knight proved himself to be a striker on form.

We now have to wait slightly over 24 hours to find out whether it is Barnsley or Huddersfield that will await us in Cardiff but what we know now for certain is the date that we will end this season - the latest aboard the Swansea City rollercoaster!

Well done one and all
