Mark Gower reveals he was dubbed the new Gazza early in his career

The new Swans midfielder - signed yesterday - started his career at Tottenham and also won England recognition which led to the dubbing of the title - a title that he says was bestowed on many people in similar positions.

“I don’t know about that comparison,” he told the Western Mail. “I think there have been a few people dubbed ‘the next Paul Gascoigne’ but it never really materialises.

“Obviously early on in my career I played for England and Tottenham so I suppose that comes with the territory. But if I can be half as good a player as he was I would be happy.”

Gower signed on the dotted line for the Swans late on Thursday evening to be part of their Championship challenge and he believes that the Swans are better equipped to handle the level of Championship football than Southend were on their entry into the division two seasons ago

“Southend were a good side when we went up but I think we lacked a bit of strength in depth,” he explained.

“One or two injuries to key players and we looked depleted.

“But Swansea have got that strength in depth. It’s a good-size squad and most, if not all, of that squad can come into the side and play.

“That’s the difference between the two teams. The actual depth and quality within the squad is much higher at Swansea.

“Back-to-back promotions with Southend got me to the Championship a couple of years ago. And, on a personal note, I felt I did well in that division.

“Obviously Swansea are offering me a good chance to get back there.

“It gives me an opportunity to push on with my career and it’s one I’m hoping to grasp.”
