Swansea City are lining up bid for Millwall's American defender Zak Whitbread that would smash the clubs record-transfer fee.

The 25 year old had been in talks with championship new boys Peterborough united over a £700,000 move to London Road. However the Houston born defender could not agree terms, with the two parties poles apart on wage demands, confirmed Posh boss Darren Ferguson, “We did have contact with Millwall and I understand we had a bid accepted. We spoke with the player, but we won't be going ahead with the deal because his wage demands were too high.”

Ferguson has also revealed that he has ended his pursuit of the former Liverpool man, "There is no doubt that Zak is a quality player, but it's now not a position we need cover for. “

Swansea do have competition to sign the defender with West Bromwich Albion, Nottingham Forest and Doncaster Rovers all thought to be in the running to lure Whitbread away from the Lions Den.

Making over 100 appearances for the London club, the Texan could leave on a free transfer next year.
