Brendan Rodgers says that Wayne Routledge will only get better after his impressive first start on Saturday against Wigan

Routledge made his first Swans start in the position behind Danny Graham in the 0-0 draw and came agonisingly close in the second half to marking his 100th Premier League appearance with the Swans first goal in the division.

That chance went just wide of the post but Rodgers was happy with what he saw as he prepares to keep Routledge in the team for tonight's Carling Cup tie at Shrewsbury.

This time he is likely to play behind Leroy Lita with Danny Graham likely to be rested and that gives another option to his play as he ponders team selection for Saturday's visit of Sunderland to the Liberty.

“It is one of the positions he can play, he is brilliant in tight spaces." Rodgers said in relation to Routledge'e starting position on Saturday

“If you look at the game when teams come and respect us and drop off you need the player in the number 10 role to have good skills. He gives us that for sure and he nearly got off the mark against Wigan.

“Saturday was his 200th league game and his 100th Premier League game, so he is a player that gives us a lot of experience.

“He has only been in for a few weeks so he is still getting up to speed. For me he will only get better.”

And that can only mean good news for the Swans
