You've Got To Take Your Chances
Sunday, 21st Sep 2014 09:52 by Planet Swans (Follow us on Twitter @swansnews)

Ashley Williams talked after the game yesterday about missed chances for the Swans and for the second week running it is relatively easy to argue that it was missed chances that cost us points yesterday on top of the obvious handicap of being reduced to ten men.

Wayne Routledge missed a glorious chance to give the Swans the lead when he smashed his shot against the bar having been played through by Gylfi Sigurdsson whilst Wilfried Bony saw a header from a Gylfi corner cleared off the line not helped by what wasn't a perfect connection when he met the ball. Had either of those two chances gone in then it could have been a different story with the pressure more on Southampton even with their one man advantage that could have seen more gaps being left in their defence and given us more of a chance of a breakaway goal.

It was the second week running that first half possession and chances didn't count for the Swans - we were very much on top at Chelsea last week but never capitalised any more than the early own goal we were given and ultimately paid the price as Chelsea - Diego Costa in particular - took their chances when they came their way.

And if there is another lesson to be learned then it is definitely one to take those chances when they come our way as that is two games where we have deservedly been on top but two games where we have ended in defeat although - as mentioned earlier - yesterday was not helped by the madness of Bony.

“It was a difficult game for obvious reasons,” acknowledged Williams. “Going down to ten men in the first half made it very tough for us. But to come away with nothing from that game is disappointing.

“We’re kicking ourselves for not taking the chances we had. Before we went down to ten men, we were doing well.

“We didn’t start off as well as we have been doing at home, but we were creating chances."
