Saints Linked With Dirk Kuyt
Wednesday, 22nd Oct 2014 21:49

Ronald Koeman is looking to bolster Saints squad further in January and for once it could be a Liverpool legend heading to St Mary's instead of out of it.

Ronald Koeman reminds me very much of Laurie McMenemy in some respects in that he is not afraid to bring in an older experienced player if he feels that it will bolster the squad, therefore it should come as no surprise that he is being linked with Fenerbahce's ex Liverpool legend Dirk Kuyt.

Some Saints supporters will question why we would want to sign a player who will be 35 next summer nada claim that it shows a lack of ambition, however Koeman knows that a squad needs to be diverse if it is to give options, plus he knows he may lose Sadio Mane for a month or so after the new year for the African Nations cup, he will need someone who can offer an alternative for a short period rather than having to shell out big money.

Kuyt would offer cover in several positions and even at 34 is still playing and scoring for Fenerbahce as well as playing for Holland in the World Cup in Brazil.

Signing Kuyt would be another step forward for Saints in building not just a team but a squad as well as the ability to bring in name players albeit that some may be at the tail end of their careers.

Sound familiar ? It should do, this was how McMenemy built and re built his Saints teams, he knew the value of a few experienced old heads around the squad, it seems Koeman things along those lines as well for sure.

Dirk Kuijt is a Dutch legend. Perfect role model. Can play LB, RB, L,R, and center midfield and as as a no 9 and 10. And hè is a Nice Guy. ( from Katwijk. )

Hmm no. Firstly Liverpool legend?
So the role of honour is Hunt, Hughes, Keegan, Rush, Dalglish, Carragher, Gerrard and er......Kuyt? Hardly. He was an average player who was mostly perspiration rather than inspiration. Yes a useful outlet back then but he can't still have those legs at 35.
He also doesn't fit the usual saints profile. Can't remember the last player we bought at that age.
We'll miss Mane but hopefully Rodriguez will be up to speed by then.

He was a virtual ever present for Liverpool over six seasons and wracked up nearly 300 games in all competitions and scored 71 goals a decent total , perhaps he is not in the class of those you mention but he is still a very well thought of player at anfield

I think you make a good point Nick. Kuyt may be useful and it is similar to what McMenemy used to do. He would bring in the odd player who were in the twilight of their career and more often than not, prove a revelation and help add that bit of experience to the younger members in the team.

Did you see him in Brazil ? Didn't play the first 2 games then ever present, including playing 5 different positions in the same match. ( perfectly ).

The Liverpool fans do love Dirk. They have a banner up often that states

Dirk Kuyt
Works Hard

Says it all. Get him in.
