England Women's football team are celebrating today after reaching their first ever World Cup semi final but few will realise that it has been done under the scrutiny of a man who has a Swansea City stamp on his managerial passport.

Mark Sampson was part of the coaching staff at the Centre of Excellence for two years under Roberto Martinez and oversaw the programme for players in the 9-16 year group.

He lists his own responsibilities at that times as

* Develop, communicate and review delivery of new technical syllabus
* Assist with coaching of YTS Players on a daily basis
* Co-ordinate coach continual professional development (CPD)
* Lease with key partners to develop links for COE
* Report progress on regular basis to Head of Youth

The England team beat Canada 2-1 to reach their first ever semi final in the World Cup where they will face holders Japan later this week for a place in the final.

Speaking upon confirming the appointment of Sampson in December 2013, FA Director of Football Development Sir Trevor Brooking said: “Mark is an outstanding manager with a tremendous passion and commitment to drive the game forward in this country.

"We were extremely impressed by Mark's vision for the England Women's team and we are all looking forward to working with him in what is a very exciting time for the women's game in this country.”
