Not all pre-season friendlies on Thursday night as there was Europa League action for both West Ham and Southampton whilst Crystal Palace were in friendly action at Bromley.

West Ham 2 AFC Astra Giurgiu 2

It wasn't the best of nights for West Ham as they drew their latest Europa League qualifying tie first leg.

Two away goals could cost them next week in the return leg as they bid to get through to the group stages of this competition with a win here and then in the final qualifying round.

The home side looked to be in pole position after Valencia opened the scoring with a close-range header and Zarate scored a superb individual goal early in the second half.

But following the dismissal of James Collins for two bookable offences, Astra Giurgiu made the extra man count and a fine strike from Fernando Boldrin and a late own goal from Angelo Ogbonna means the tie is wide open heading into the second leg in Romania next week.

Slaven Bilic: "It was a very frustrating evening because we played well until the moment we had a player sent-off

“We were two-up and we were dominating the game.

"We had chances to score the third goal. It was a professional foul from Collins and I can't blame him in that situation. The second yellow was a little harsh, for me."

Southampton 3 Vitesse Arnhem 0

It was a much better night for Southampton in the same round of the competition as they coasted to victory against their Dutch opponents.

Graziano Pellè and DuÅ¡an Tadić put the hosts in control. Pellè opened the scoring with a fierce strike on 36 minutes, while Tadić’s penalty on the stroke of half-time gave Saints room to breathe.

Substitute Shane Long combined with new boy Juanmi to seal a comfortable victory in Saints’ first European game for 12 years, where they gave themselves every chance of having another one to look forward to in a few weeks’ time.

Ronald Koeman: “To win the first leg at home 3-0 in European football is the perfect result. It’s a great result to go to Holland with

“For sure in the first half, after a difficult start, we controlled the game and had some good chances. It was a great first goal of Pellè, good movement and a good pass from Sadio.

“Okay, the penalty makes it easier in the second half. Maybe we took it a little bit too easy in the second half and we didn’t try to dominate and score more goals."

Bromley 0 Crystal Palace 6

New signing Patrick Bamford grabbed a hat-trick as Crystal Palace romped home in style against Bromley.

The Chelsea loanee had secured the match ball inside 20 minutes against the Conference South champions, managed by former Palace chairman Mark Goldberg.

Sulley Kaikai, Dwight Gayle and Wilfried Zaha were also on target for the visitors
