Danny Reet joined Dale on a loan deal in March 2007 making his debut in the sensational 7-2 victory against Stockport County. He came with the intention of boosting his fitness whilst helping Dale's late and improbably push towards the play offs. Reet had been around League Two for a couple of seasons, having started his career with his hometown club Sheffield Wednesday. A loan spell at Bury and a number of goals following his move to Mansfield Town had made Reet hot property and he certainly looked like he wouldn't be hanging around this division for too long.
However, his career had come off the rails somewhat. When he signed for Dale, he looked twice the player that we'd come up against in previous encounters. Unfortunately, he was twice the player in terms of his size. He had most certainly steered clear of the Slimfast plan and you could see why Mansfield were looking to offload him.
It's unknown whether they were looking at getting Reet off their wage bill or whether they were hoping a loan move to Dale might get Reet enjoying his football again and working on his fitness. But it wasn't a move which worked out.
He made just six appearances for Dale, all off the bench, and returned to Mansfield at the end of the season with the most memorable thing about the striker being his colourful choice of footwear. Mansfield manager Billy Dearden was vocal in his disappointment at Reet's loan spell at Dale saying that he could have got more football had he stopped at Mansfield.
